Frequency spectrum management – a thorny issue

giving the minister wide powers to manage spectrum in SKA-designated areas.

OK, then we are all stuffed.....
 
the ability of ICASA to sort out frequency issues is reflected in the fact that industry is organising workshops and asking ICASA to nominate the experts it wants to attend so that we can actually try and move forward on this issue

not much good to increase infrastructure competition without allocating frequency to new entrants who plan to use it
 
My gripe about spectrum allocation, is that Poison Ivy decided which companies would get allocated WiMax spectrum - one of them being Telkodemonopolies, this is supposed to be !CASA's domain - incompetent as it is, but Poison Ivy is even more incompetent and simply decreed without any public discussion which !CASA is forced to accommodate according to legislation.
  • Sentech is doing nothing with the WiMax spectrum that Poison Ivy decreed would be set aside for Sentech.
  • Telkodemonopolies refuses to make WiMax available to the vast majority of its customers, IMO Telkodemonopolies should not be allowed to operate a WiMax network - period!!!
  • I won't say anything about NeeTel's WiMax which doesn't exist yet.
  • Vodacom and iBurst will hopefully have the mobile implementation of WiMax available soon - probably long before NeeTel :rolleyes:.
  • MWeb has test spectrum but nothing concrete to say that it will definitely get WiMax spectrum - MWeb probably has more customers using its test WiMax network than Telkodemonopolies has using its commercial WiMax network, and MWeb commendably decided to test WiMax in under-serviced areas - even if it is just good business sense obviously hoping that this would sway the likes of Poison Ivy towards issuing MWeb with WiMax spectrum and the relevant licence.
  • There are also a bunch of other companies that have been testing WiMax [e.g. IS & others], or would like to get into WiMax [e.g. Altech].
Obviously there isn't enough spectrum available, but Poison Ivy really should not be allowed to run amuck dishing out spectrum to whoever tickles her fancy.
