Am I the only one that thinks it's pathetic you STILL have to chose a zone on your computers DVD drive. It's abnormal. I watch zone one and zone two discs, so I keep having to change my laptop's drive. Now, I've got one change left...and after that - it's stuck on what-ever I have it on.

It's not so much of a problem in a PC...just buy two drives, they R300 each. But a laptop drive is much more expensive. I guess, I could go external...but bloody hell. How can we just accept that the industry is making us chose on our own computers.

Is there a way around it?

Often VLC will ignore the zones - alternatively rip them and remove the zone. I rip all my new dvds and encode them to h264 anyway.
 
What is VLC? *confused*

I should just rip the DVD's. It's just such a pain though. Good DVD ripping software for the mac and PC while we're here!??
 
AnyDVD

What about AnyDVD ? I'm using it atm and it works great, no need to change the region on your dvd drive.

"AnyDVD works in the background to automatically remove the copy protection of a DVD movie as soon as it's inserted into the drive, allowing you then to backup the movie using a DVD backup tool such as CloneDVD and CloneDVD mobile. You can also remove the RPC region code, thereby making the movie region free and viewable on any DVD player and with any DVD player software. "
 
Flashing the firmware on some drives also resets that counter (zone counter thingy)
 
The zone issue will probably end within the next 5 years as some big companies are contemplating same day ALL PLATFORM releases. Straight to cinema, dvd, and wherever else to avoid piracy...

There is a way around it........ and it's name is DVD43

1. Install
2. Put in a DVD
3. Program detects which region the DVD is from
4. Program changes to the correct region WITHOUT DROPPING A CHANGE COUNTER ON YOUR DRIVE!!!! :eek:

This is by far the best anti-region-program-thingy I've seen......... Oh, and it's free. ;)
 
Getting dvd drives to be region free is so much harder than getting the tv dvd players/recorders unlocked with them it's entering the right code to get to the menu to set it to region free.

Wonder why it's different for the dvd drives.

BTW anybody know of any dvd region free software for vista 64 bit??

Its fairly easy to make the drive region free but the problem is that once the drive is region free Windows and and many cases the DVD playing software still enforce the original region code.
 
Can someone please point me in the direction of a way to make my Panasonic DVD player region free. It's a stand alone player, with the TV. I'll get the exact model number later if you need that.

Where was it purchased?, because most retailer flash it free of charge. I bought my Philips DVD/DviX player @ Hi Fi Cop and they flashed it before you leave and my Sony DVD , which I bought @ Makro ,they gave me the instructions before I left. I did it at home in three simple steps.

You can go back to the retailer where you purchased it and asked them for the supplier region free instructions they give it to you, no questions asked.

I agree, I have been using it for some time, I am able to rip and play any DVD :)

A Risky hardware alternative is to see if there are hacked firmwares for your drive, some firmwares are able to do amazing things to drives I hear ;)

It is typically fairly easy to defeat region protection on a desktop machine. Unfortunately the brand of drive commonly used in laptops, and that includes Macs, has been made deliberately difficult, typically impossible, to defeat.
 
DVDDecrypter typically does not work, on its own, on R2 DVDs released subsequent to development on it being stopped.

Google for it, type in the make and model number and add "region free".

Thats news to me. Why should it not work anymore? Cause they can't change any of the underlying CSS encryption since this would make old DVD players useless.:confused:
