Government battles in telecoms space

“Telkom was given too long an exclusivity period and government then made the mistake of opting for a duopoly instead of full competition. Moreover, it tried to introduce the duopoly under adverse investment conditions, and then the Minister made a bad situation worse by announcing, first, that Value-Added Network Services licencees, including Internet Service Providers, could build their own infrastructure – and then revoking the announcement.”

“Now she is threatening to refuse private sector cables landing rights unless they meet onerous ownership conditions and the requirements of the Nepad Network,” said Smuts.

Nice article rounding up the undersea cables... but it makes me angry. Gives a very clear indecation that the DoC are not working for the best interests of communications in SA, but have their own agenda.
 
Somebody please smack some sense into that Doughnut munching moron we called the minister of Communications. She is possibly more useless than our African Potatoe Munching, Alcoholic, Thieving Health minister.

Dont take this the wrong way - but Duh.

The government might at one time have been of the people, and while it is currently by the people, it certainly cant claim to be for the people and the way the DoC conducts matters just goes to prove it. :mad:

The people may be the majority when it come to votes, but they are not be the majority when it comes to internet usage, so this is over their heads and we can expect status quo to remain come the next elections, unfortunately:rolleyes:.
