550 relay not permitted

Hi some of our email keeps bouncing back with 550 relay not permitted error.

Any ideas why this happens?

We are using exchange and smtp.saix.net for our outgoing mail.
 
you probably need to authenticate against the SMTP server.

Thanks for the reply. I know with Hetzner you have to authenticate because every mail we sent gave that error but then I changed to Telkom's SMTP server and now only some emails fail not all of them.

it sounds like SAIX smtp server is up the creek. Chances are the ones that are being delivered are being delivered on SAIX backbone (i.e. the recipient servers are residing directly with SAIX), in which case their SMTP servers are not set up very well. If authentication with the SAIX SMTP does not resolve your problem, then your best bet is to give them a call.
 
who's your isp (mweb perhaps)? perhaps ur dns records didnt replicate all over.

EDIT: by isp i mean where is your domain hosted?

If memory serves me right, smtp.saix.net tries to connect to the recipient server and do "helo"/"mail from"/"rcpt to" before giving you the OK. If the recipient server gives a 550, you get a 550. If this is what happens, it means that the server listed as MX for the domain you're sending to, is not configured to accept mail for that domain, so it thinks smtp.saix.net is trying to relay through it.

Of course, it could also be finger trouble on their part. Wouldn't be the first time...

THanks was Human error the computer that had the problem also had another account added in outlook which was still set to Hetzner's server which requires authentication.

Thanks for all the help guys.
