TV Questions: LCD vs. Plasma for sport:

I'm a total n00b when it comes to TV's. All I know is where to switch them on and how to tune into MTV.

My father in law wants to by a flat screen TV. He was in Audio Vision this weekend and they told him that Plasma is much better than LCD for sport (which is what he watches most).

He's probably going to buy a moderate size screen (not massive) and I don't think budget is a major concern. It's more about quality.

Any comments, experience, opinion, propaganda would be helpful in helping him decide.
 
I think there are tons of threads on here and sites on the net ;)

Everyone here is going to start shouting HDTV, but I disagree buying now for HDTV in 2 years. Anyway, I took a plasma for the faster response times (better for sports), deeper black levels and 20% saving over an LCD. In 2 years when HDTV does become the norm, I'll buy another screen and use mine as a 2nd TV.
 
I'd just buy and LCD since it uses MUCH less power compared to a plasma. A plasma draws massive amounts of current to display bright colors/whites (which most programming consists of) since it's idle display color is black, whereas white is the idle color of an LCD.
 
Judging by the previous threads, I'm usually one of a handful suggesting plasma ;)
 
I keep hearing the power issue - but how much power does it really take? Even at 150hrs veiwing per month you probably pay R50.00pm more? I think? I dunno ;)

So you're not punting it for resolution then?

This could be true for some models but there is a very small diff in power consumption is newer models, LCD Vs Plasma about 50W diff in favour of LCD

I have a 42" sansui watch a lot of sport, discovery and PS2 :)

for a low-ish price level, plasma will prolly be better.
If you are looking for future proofing (at a higher price) you could look at a high frame rate LCD like the Sony D series BRAVIA
 
Power consumption is a non-issue in this case.

The issue is clarity and performance when watching sport.

What size room is it going in and how well ventilated is it because my 42" plasma generates a whole lot of heat - which is fine by me in the winter :) but come summer is gets a bit uncomfortable in there at times.
 
What are the chances that your dad will buy the HD decoder from Multichoice in the next year or so?

If he's not going to upgrade in the next two years, I'd suggest an XGA resolution plasma.
