Airport Extreeme, 300Mbps, righhttt?

I've got an Intel 4965AGN 300MB/s 802.11(n) wifi card in my lappi, and it is connected to my airport extreme router which is also supposed to max out at 300mbps, why is it running at 130Mbps however near i am to the router?

I hav tried the 'n only' 5GHz option, it still stays at 130mbps.

anyone's Airport Extreme running at 300mbps?
 
its wireless - you'll NEVER get max speed

-always- at best - half the speed!

however - 130mips - impressive!
 
300mbit/s is the ideal "lab" conditions - same thing car maufacturers have been doing for years when quoting fuel consumption ;)

anything over 100mbit/s = good
 
AFAIK 802.11n is still a draft spec so there could be incompatibilities between the two manufacturers.

You have to remember the you cannot measure the overhead of wireless you can only measure the actual throughput.

as was mentioned a general rule is to divide by two so if you have 11Mbps it will be 5.5Mbps or about 550 -600K (yes i know 8bits = 1byte)

so it sound about right that you are doing 130Mbps which i think is pretty good.
 
Another thing to remember is that wifi is vulnerable to all sorts of interference. I have battled with wireless at a client who were in a fairly small building, drywalling right through - nothing obvious that could affect them. They had two APs, and a variety of network cards, and all of them kept falling off. Changing the APs made no difference. The bizarre thing was, if I went one floor donwstairs from them, I got a perfect strong signal. Walking a couple of buildings down the road from them, I still got a stable signal. But not inside their office. Go figure.
