I have a gigabyte 8500gt 512mb ddr2 256 bit.I am not sure what graphicks card to upgrade to.I think of upgrading to a 8800gts or ATI 2900 pro. Any recommends?:o

Well, my suggestion for a graphicks card would be the 8800GTS. I wouldn't suggest touching ATI with a ten-foot pole at the moment. How much do you have to spend?

Oh, and welcome to MyADSL :)

you guys didn't ask the all important question...

How much can you spend?!?

I just bought myself a XFX 8800GTS XXX edition (320MB) and I paid R3200, best buy I've done in a while, Crysis looks beautiful with everything on HIGH :) NO LAG!

Dont go for the Ati HD2900 pro. Its old now. Rather get the HD3870 if you decide to go with Ati/amd

I have a HD3870 and its pretty decent but you have to manually control the fan in RivaTuner because the card does not do a good job.

Its been proven that the HD3870 is slower than the HD2900pro.

Thats odd. The pro is slower than the normal HD2900 but the HD3870 is pretty close to and beats the 2900 in many of the reviews on the web

Main source would be toms hardware. Even some of the benchmarks in your link shows that the HD38** is faster in some cases. That can easily be put down to driver optimisations. Anyways I dont think its worth debating because it could go on forever.... never ending story

My personal opinion is that the HD3870 is better than the HD2900 because its quiet and the drivers are not 100% yet so the performance can still increase a little bit. It allows me to play Crysis on high with an old amd x2 cpu so it's not dead slow either.

depends on the substance to give the 'every thing high' experience ;)

Thanks guys I was thinking about spending about R3000.Is the 9 series coming out in Feb?Mabey I should wait but playing the waiting game isn't really my thing.I see you recommend the 8800gts alot.If I deside to go with it should I take the 320mb or 640mb?

NO!!!!!

Don't buy an 8800GTS 320/640MB

The 8800GT is faster then both.

Also : The new 8800GTS is out (512MB), if you HAVE to have an 8800GTS, go for the 512MB new one.

In terms of performance, the cards are basically ranked as follows :

8800GTS(320MB)<8800GTS(640MB)<8800GT<8800GTS(512MB)<=8800GTX(768MB)

Best bang-for-buck : 8800GT

You havent actually given me any proof to back what you're saying, and i have given you the proof that the HD2900XT outpreforms the HD3870...

Either way, I'd still go for the 8800 as it's better than the ATI!. ;)
