Is Vista still as problematic as it was 6months ago?

hi all thanks for taking your time to read my post

as the topic title says i just want to know is Vista still as problematic as it was 6months ago?

the reason why i am asking, is because i am due for a PC upgrade soon and i am wondering weather i should install Vista Ultimate or just use my Windows XP instead.

some friends of mine told me that microsoft ironed out many creases in vista, and computability issues are over (for the most part at least)

I think so yes. I'm going Vista this year. That's a good spec pc so it'll run no probs
 
I still don't like it after spending weeks to get it "just so". It is a huge software bloat needing at least 2GB of RAM to function acceptably. Stick with XP, I miss it every day...
 
Pro's
* Instant searching..instant as in "quicker than thought" instant
* The annoying dog doesn't appear when you search (I want to kick it)
* The annoying flashlight is no longer there when its looking for something or reading a dvd..
* It boots quick and you can start working as soon as you've logged in, you dont ahve to wait for backround applications to start before you can do anything
* When an application crashes (quite rare, unless you have cracks or whatnots :rolleyes:) you have the option to to connect to the net and find out whats wrong, it at actualy works, no more "send"/"dont send"
* When you shut down your pc and 7 or 2 or 59 applications are running it asks if you're sure because these apps are still open.
* If ever you get to that situation, you'll never click "End Task" more than once
* a Rating system to see if games are compatible (only shows on new games I'm afraid), and also to show off teh hardcoreness of your PC to your friends
* Options to run games in XP SP2 mode and DX9 mode
* Its pretty
* Video backrounds (not on all versions)
* er..Windows Media Centre (you may NEVER use another music/media player again)
* You can select different audio levels for different applications
* The first OS where I only had to install my USB iBurst modem's drivers and NOTHING else..it connected to the net and got me the latest drivers of everything, I went from first boot to available audio in 2-5 minutes
* You can alt+tab or win+tab into Desktop

Cons:
* Bluetooth stack is just as bad as in XP
* There are pop ups asking you if you are sure if you want to change settings, any settings, go to Security settings and switch it off as soon as you've installed it, or else you'll hate Vista
* Its RAM hungry, buy more RAM, you can never have too much RAM!!!
* Its Data hungry, so far I have spent about 200-300Mb on updates (although Dreamscene is largely to blame :o)
* er..Your XP running friends may hate you after you tell them day after day how awesome Vista is.
* You may have some rare piece of hardware that doesn't have Vista drivers, dont blame Microsoft, blame the lazy company who made the hardware :p
* IE7 sucks..
* people who complain about noticable drop in FPS in Vista are obviosly running slow pc's, dont listen to them, who wants to play games from 2003 anyway?
* In XP I had to click/double about 3 times to get to the place where I can change the IP of a Network connection, in Vista its about 5-6 clicks..
* I have run out of cons..go..go get it..now

I hate to say it, but Vista is a really bad attempt at trying to mimic a MAC.

The irony now is that MAC people always told me at how beautiful the OS does something simple, like copying a file, and I was like "WTF? I just want to copy".

Difference: You buy a MAC with the OS, plug it in and everything works. You buy Vista and then find out you need a bigger RAM-this, faster CPU-that.

Or you can buy a big PC everything, load Vista and still struggle. Just when Vista works perfectly (not that XP really does), Microsoft launches something even newer that needs bigger-everything to work.
 
go with vista, it sucked big time when it was first out but now, honestly, everything is perfectly fine and you have a powerful pc
 
With the release of sp1 rc1 vista is just as fast as xp. the only issue I had previously was when moving files, it was quite slow but sp 1 fixes this.

There are some software which has issues but 99% of my games and programs work. the only ones which don't are the cheap companies who don't have signed drivers so it's a pain in the ass to get running on vista x64 and acquamark which doesn't work under x64. All my other programs and games work without a problem.

I agree, but you cant be running Windows 95 and expect to just run Windows 2000 with no hiccups, or play Farcry at its highest and then be surprised when Crysis runs in slideshow mode on its lowest setting?

You get a new girlfrend you cant expect her to like your old girlfriend's stuff.

I hate Microsoft and everything they ever made, but for once...for once they realised that I actually want to use my operating system to do things, its not a means to an end, you should enjoy the experience.
 
sorry but i love vista :)

you dont need that much of a huge system to install vista considering some laptops with only 512 meg ram and 1.7ghz cpu can run it just fine

Vista Business, just booted with nothing running uses 83% of available resources on a 1GB RAM system. If you up the RAM to 2GB, the same state uses 51%. So Vista want 1GB RAM just to sit there doing nothing?
 
<sorry for the hijack> I would like to upgrade from Vista Business to Vista Ultimate (for DVD Maker), but it doesn't appear to be possible to do that online in ZA like it is in the States. Is there anyone here that offers this option that anyone knows of?
