Giving up on ADSL

Well I am giving it up...going to try terminate my ADSL misery as cheaply as I possibly can. I will attempt to negotiate some deal with the modem but I am not optimistic knowing Telkoms track record.

For those who wish to get ADSL , as long as you don't download a lot internationally or use a P2P program like Kazaa often then ADSL may be alright for you. Remember 3 gigs is not a lot and when its finished the speed after being capped (international) is so slow its virtually non-existant. ADSL is very good if you plan to play online games utiliseing the local SA servers..esp using SAIX GAMING SERVERS (SGS) or if you browse local SA sites mostly.

One last gripe : When was Telkom promoted to SA internet police ? By useing network shaping/port prioritising Telkom is basically telling users what they may do and not do...do you realise this also effects local IRC traffic ??

Anyways good luck , I will pop in to see how you are progressing except I will use my old faithfull 56k modem...or maybe get a 64k ISDN.

I've decided to give it one more month. Next month, I'll switch off my Kazaa (half of my volume was generated by users accessing stuff from me) and will otherwise restrain myself. I'll also disable downloading of images in IE.
Then I'll see how I fare with my 3GB.
If I hit a wall again, I'll cancel as well and leave ADSL to rich Sandton housewives for emailing their daughters in Australia....

One of the things included in my letters is the possible free transition to ISDN and a refund on the modem. I must add that I am not very optimistic about this as Telkom already previously let me know that this is out of the question. Of around 40 complaint letter send, this is the only one that was returned. As I said in a previous mail, I think nearly the only way that they will pay any attention to complaints is if it can impact financially on them.

Hi, I'm with you. Decided to give it ONE more month. Definately not willing anymore to pay for a service that I don't get. It's like paying R350 per month for DSTV & only being able to watch MNET ...or something like that!

What a pity...it could've been ( and still can be ) a great service.

I have posted in another thread on this but think this is worthy a mention here.

My connection is topped up with a MWEB Broadband incoming satellite connection. I currently play an online MMORPG with it's server based in the UK. Almost cannot play it direct over the ADSL, have to dial the SAT VPN up. It has a 1sec lag but at least I can play.

The sat is R325 per month, you need to have an DSTV dish and this needs to be altered if u use it for DSTV. Else you can just install a dish at approximately R900. You also need a network card to connect to the dish, last check this was I think R2000. Feel free to get in touch with me if you interested in it.

Would like to know what game this is for starters, and yes, am interested to know more. I also play a MMORPG with the server located in europe.
