Thread: Linux From Scratch

  1. #1

    Default Linux From Scratch

Has anyone heard of this, or tried it? I am considering giving it a go, maybe for a firewall or something. Only issue is I am running out of boxen, and I am not going to build it on my main pc due to the down time it would cause (you know, because I would try build it, screw it up, try to compile, get a bunch of kernel errors, start over, repeat, swear, start over, cross fingers, sacrifice virgins, compile correctly only to get reiserfs disk errors due to loadshedding during a disk sync, start over, etc.)

    Looks interesting.

Why not use virtualbox to give it a try?
Christ-mass is NOT for Christians. Jeremiah 10.
Is the 10 Commandments for Christians?

Saturday is the Seventh day, Sunday is the first day.

For people who find Gentoo too mainstream/easy/unoptimised for their system.

Of course, LFS is just a half-measure. Real men write their own kernels.

Looks interesting but would involve a vast knowledge in Linux and a massive amount of time.

Kasyx must have the skills. I surely do not!

I only pretend to have the skills. I sit here posting with my trusty "Dummy's Guide to Linux" by my side

I hadn't actually thought of doing it through virtualbox...

Perhaps I could set it up on a virtual partition, and then use something like imagecast to write an image of it to dvd to ghost onto my HDD when I have finished building it.

    Hmm...

Its fun to play with. If your wanting to learn how a linux system is put together then this is the thing for you. It comes with a step by step manual to follow. Get yourself a vmware box to play with. Use the Live cd to start. Makes it easier than having to install a distro just to trash it while you build your version. Its an uber linux learning tool. Not for the faint hearted though. Takes hours/weeks off your life.

Right, well I have just started to build Linux From Scratch on VirtualBox.

So far I haven't broken anything, at least not too badly. Only thing I have to watch out for is typos, as they could be the end of me. Will keep you updated on my progress, because, you know, you are all watching this thread with baited breath

You need a lot of time, but I learned quite a lot about Linux! (You don't need a lot of Linux experience!) My first attempt failed and I didn't feel like troubleshooting. 2 other attempts after that was successful.

If you have the time and would like to learn more about Linux I would advise anyone to give it a try!

    Kasyx: Good luck!

I don't see the point, unless you were making some really small embedded system / designing something for a very specific purpose.

    Upgrades would be a bitch

The point is to say that I created Linux from scratch

Not to mention the amount of stuff I will learn from it. What's the point of making a scale model of a battleship with all the moving parts?
