Thread: VPN over PPPoE

    Default VPN over PPPoE

    Hi,

I try to use a Netscreen VPN (to the UK) over Telkom's ADSL line, and get a constant 50% packet loss. This happens day and night, have switched ISP's and still have the same problem.

When using a normal dialup or ISDN, I get 0% packet loss.

Anyone now what could be causing this?

I already changed MTU sizes to cope with Telkom's black hole routers, but no joy.

I have a UUNet VPN, used to manage our servers there, and the connection is terrible over ADSL... It constantly hangs and I have to disconnect and reconnect. The wierd thing is that it can work fine for quite a long while and then suddenly it just deteriorates.

I read something about VPNs and the DG814 and some fix in the new firmware, but I have updated the firmware and the results are the same...

All I can say is that it is %$%#% irritating and the UUclowns are as clueless as Telkom...

Wouldn't that be because VPN uses ports that Telkom considers low priority i.e. not 80,21 and 110? It's like the packet loss you get after you're capped.

    Correct PAF,

I used to use Cisco VPN client over ADSL to Finland when it first came out, was very acceptable [:)]

Now I have returned to the ISDN line for VPN connections, not any problems there.

When Telkom started messing with the traffic shaping (MIS-SHAPING), most of my work critical functions cannot be performed over ADSL.

Honestly considering dumping this S^&T and paying my 128k ISDN bill, none of the CAP & SHAPING Bull !

    Just my 2cents worth.

I can verify packet loss on online games, Star Wars Galaxies never drops below 10% packet loss and can go as high as 30%. Not as bad as the 50% packet loss for the VPN, but there shouldn't be packet loss in either of these applications.
