Hi folks

There have been many questions regarding Neotel’s 24 month contract. Neotel just contacted us and said that their contract is a ‘best of both worlds’ service.

All subscribers will have the benefit of a ‘subsidized’ device through a 24 month contract, but if a subscriber would like to terminate their contract after month 5 or 6 (or whatever else), they will only be liable for the monthly device cost (R 80 per month VAT inclusive) and NOT the actual R 599.00 per month. This eliminates the need for upfront device payments (generally associated with month-to-moth services) but also gives the freedom to cancel the contract without having to fork out the full amount for the full 24 months.

I hope this clarifies this issue.

Regards,

RPM

Do you have the option to give the device back as well when cancelling your contract?
Otherwise what's the point of cancelling the contract if I still have to pay for a phone that I might not use anymore?

That is good, i'm sure that most people will not want to pay for a device up front
(24 * R80 = R2000-+ ).

+1 for neotel but we still want better devices (routers etc)

Things you buy cannot be taken back for a refund after a certain time, normally 7 days.. I doubt they'll take the device back.

You could sell the device... they should make a plan for that.

I asume that after 24 months your contract will be reduced ? Also if you purchase a second hand device.

Me on the other hand would prefer to pay upfront :).
+1 for better devices (i.e. simultaneous phone & internet on router)

Unless you look at is as rental and after 24 months you own it

I want to purhase my own device and just connect to the Neotel network on a month to month basis.. make a contract like that and I will sign up today.

And if the device costs exactly R80 x 24? Why not pay it off?

What they should do is get a device that you can connect your ADSL router/telephone/answering machine to, which does all the conversion from wireless to wired for you. This "phone" isn't cordless, it can't send faxes and it does a poor job of being a modem.

Is my idea really that crazy?

So is there another operator who utilise CDMA? If not then what's the point of paying R80/PM and keep the device if not using their service anymore?

Best of both worlds my ^%$ As far as I am concerned it is better for some but the worst of both worlds for me. I am stuck into paying for a 24 month contract. If I want to leave then I need to pay for a device that I am not going to be able to use anywhere else in South Africa??? Surely if I cancel then I don't want the service anymore and so don't actually want the modem?? 24 month contracts are lame. There are guys who like them and that is fair. Not everyone is the same and we have different needs. I am sure that there are many people like me out there who don't want to sign lame contracts...

I would rather buy the device upfront now while I have cash in the bank. Who knows what will happen over 24 months. I might be retrenched and then I can't afford to pay the R600 but I still need to pay cash for a useless modem?

I want to be able to buy my own equipment. I want an ethernet device that I can hook up to my wireless router.

I hope they don't force you to use their device. If it uses standard cellphone technology that is available in the US can I import a device from there and use it on their network?

lol I paid R1200.00 for a reciver for Aerosat and It's still not mine :(
