Neotel Latency question

I game online and I am currently using whats left of my canceled Iburst account and I absolutely hate it. Continuous disconnects inconsistent latency and no support service to speak of. But that is not the case.

I am considering a Neotel connection but I don't want to sign a 24 month contract for something that will be as bad for online gaming (WoW) as Iburst is.

Does anyone here have any experience with Neotel and online games. Preferably with overseas servers. The review I read before said that they got a terrible 1k+ ms local from Jhb to CT. That does not give me hight hopes at all.

For those that are wondering why I don't just go the fixed line route, I have no last mile landlines in my building complex and when applied for (October 2007) Telkom gave me a installation date of maybe October 2008. So this is a story for another thread.

Any feedback on the Neotel package for gaming would be welcome - especially if it is good news.

So far there is no info on a gaming package from neotel. One thing we do know is cdma2000 just doesnt seem suited to low latency gaming. The best bet would be to try and get a wimax solution. Be that from neotel around next year, or telkom currently.

Yep, WiMAX is more than adequate for online gaming. I easily get sub 80 pings to saix.games.net and on WoW I average around 700 to the EU servers. Completely playable

Should probably have mentioned that I cannot get WiMax. Apparently my area is not covered.

Really hope that WiMax will better for online gaming but line always the best than wireless. I will try with WiMax when it arrives in my area in Centurion.

Neotel had some problems with local ping caused they were routing their traffic like politicians. Should be sort by now. I don't have any first hand experience though.

Seems Neotel contracted a few iBurst's expertees over to them...

Does anyone even have neotel yet? Can nobody on Neotel perform simple traceroutes to a US, UK, and ZA server (different peers) and paste the results here? Would also like to see Telkom WIMAX traceroutes. My DSL has been down for 2 months and so I'm considering either option - although if Neotel has better latency, I will go with them because I'd prefer to cut Telkom out completely: it's because of them I havent had a phone or internet at home for over 2 months, why would I want to support them further?

Crappy latencies

I had NeoHell for about 11 months and my experience with online gaming ( with nothing running in the background) is as follows:

* Call of Duty 4 Multiplayer is frustrating the majority of the times because the latency would shoot up to 1200 ( I think this may be punkbuster ). At times I could get killed with my own bullets and this is on local servers.

* WoW wasn't too bad, though sometimes the ping jumped to 1000. ( I applied a registry hack to lower it a bit, the one where you modify the TcpAckFrequency ). Its not horrible considering that it isnt a fast paced game really. God forbid when a big patch comes out, I would let it download and go to bed. A line I used frequently while with NeoHell: " oh well, maybe I can play tomorrow"

* Main problem is playing online games and ( lol when I am kicking-a** ) the line frequently disconnects. Imagine playing Call of Duty 4 MW2 after waiting in the bloody queue for long and you play for a few minutes, the line disconnects and you're out......now you're back in the queue again or really getting into the game and when you wanna snipe someone or do something, the ping jumps higher than the petrol price......lag.....lag......lag......whoops and you're dead.


In conclusion:

Unless your main priority with Neohell is to download alot of torrents and stuff to run 24/7, they are not recommended. besides absolute ****e service,horrible latencies, incompetent helpdesk, endless hassles, unreliable speeds, unreliable uptime, frequent disconnects.........ok I think you get my point

Why not look at www.amobia.com ?

It's apparently pretty darn good with great latencies.

I hoooked my PS3 with Battlefield Bad company 2 and played online the whole weekend with Neotel Prime
Was surprised how good it was, as I just cancelled my neotel because of slow downloads

I had 2 disconnects in 2 days and about 4/5 times where the play was slow that it readjusted my position on the map while i was running - all in all is was playable though

Well i play MW2 with my Neflex and its not to bad , bud the regular lag spikes is kinda frustrating but on the other its not suicidal. Neotel has its on and off days finding games under 80 ping but most of the times im happy.

I haven't been playing for a while but I used to play WoW on the EU servers a lot and I consistently got pings between 400 and 600ms. There were spikes and it doesn't like if you play and download at the smae time but other than that I was reasonably happy.

That said I am not too fussy and don't play any FPSs.

I also haven't noticed any serious degradation in my Neotel connection over the 18 months I have had it.
