Thread: Compiz Fusion help

    Question Compiz Fusion help

    Hi all,

I am a very new kubuntu hardy user (decided to install and give it a go) am using the 32 bit with nvidia card on the restricted drivers.

k,well got compiz installed and working but its causing a few troubles when enabled and all the effects work.

Now when I have my mouse on the front window the other windows' behind borders disappear (im guessing this is an option somewhere). But sometimes when I go back to the back windows ,the border for the front window will like half disappear and leave lines there.

Also when I select a checkbox or radiobutton, it doesn't check them but just greys the block out.

And lastly, the icons that "bounce" on the cursor when you run something don't draw properly, they'll have like a black background to them or something.

Ya I'm a complete linux noob so I have no idea how to fix this or even what to search for in google so any help appreciated

    Thanx in advance

*EDIT managed to fix the windows bar thing

    Welcome to linux.....
First question. What graphics card do you have? Like any graphics intensive program/game Compiz needs something nice to work with....
From there on we can try eliminate issues.

Thought it might be your graphics card.... evidently not.
Can you tell me which of the Compiz packages (list them) you have installed? just write down the package names from your Adept manager. I had an issue and it was a dependency at the end of the day.

Got the following installed for compiz, its pretty much what it installs when you go to desktop effects & then the manager

    compiz-core
    compiz-fusion-plugins-extra
    compiz-fusion-plugins-main
    compiz-kde
    compiz-plugins
    compigconfig-backend-gconf
    compizconfig-settings-manager
    desktop-effects-kde
    emerald
    libdecoration0
    libemeraldengine0
    python-compizconfig

You are running it in KDE, right? Why then do have compigconfig-backend-gconf installed and not compigconfig-backend-kconf? That might be an issue. Try this and if it does not work, replace your window manager, emerald, with withthe standard gtk window manager. You can do this from your system settings-> appearance, I think. (I use gnome, haven't been to KDE in a month+)

Ya, I'm in KDE & thats a good point, I wonder why the installer would bring that one down

as soon as I can get my wireless connection working I'll try install the other 1, at the moment it sees the router, I click connect, enter passkey, it tries to connect, gets to 28% "configuring" then has an error.sigh, not a very good 1st impression of linux i must say

The 28% error with your router.... I get it too, now and then. Happened in Windows too. Try the following: Restart your router, then when it is fully active, try connect (make sure it has your passkey), then restart your computer again. That usually works for me.

Compiz does give some problems now and then, but it has happened to a lot of people. Not an isolated issue, nothing to do with Linux specifically either. Just a configuration problem maybe on the developer's side.

Try it without the emerald window manager, I had issues with that.

ok,got compigconfig-backend-kconf installed now and still the same, and still no luck with the wireless either, also tried without emerald and also still the same

    *EDIT
With emerald i have to type emerald --replace every time I start up, how do I make this a permanent thing?
    Thanx

Like I mentioned earlier, go to your system settings and look for your themes. You will have a choice between gtk and some others. Emerald should be there. Otherwise, look for your Emerald settings. Can't remember where that resides, but it should have a default option too.
