Telkom officially said it is testing 8mbps so what will neotel do? speed up their fixed line services? maybe start a plan to make 8mbps or higher? we just got to wait and see, only if there was a neotel rep to confirm?

Neotel won't do anything, they're still sorting themselves out, give them a year or so, then you will see things change :)

Wanting something so soon is just asking for a miracle which we all know is something we won't get anytime soon.

They will eventually upgrade their cdma service to higher speeds. Not anytime soon though!

How many people will actually notice the difference between Neotel's current fast internet access and 8Mb/s Telkom ADSL?

For all practical purposes web pages should load in a blink at both speeds - depending on the backhaul and the speed at which the webserver can deliver.

8mbps is a marketing stratigy... now for newshost that would rock

Lots of people, because Neotel will be wireless. It should be easily noticeable on local and cached content.

Websites won't load in a blink, they should load at the same speed that 4mbps does right now, and probably significantly slower on Neotel with big flash pages. Real world speeds of 300-700kb aren't that impressive. :(

What fixed line services? We don't know anything about their speeds or even plans for fixed line yet. If they are building their infrastructure from scratch then it will most likely be faster than 8mbps.

If you mean CDMA then it isn't up to them. They have to wait for faster revisions of the technology to come out. They should get to 3.1mbps pretty soon then it will take a while from there.

Where did you get this information from?

Yip. As it is they are not in direct competition with Telkom yet anyway. This only means they have more catching up to do when they release their ADSL product.

No

First to the original question what will Neotel do, nothing cause they don't have any fixed line service as yet.

And in response to the quote above, CDMA cannot even get close to 8mbps, currently CDMA rev B will only offer a max of 4,9mbps connections and with Neotel just launching Rev A at the moment I cannot see them upgrading to Rev B any time soon.

And finally with Telkom currently getting ready to unbundle it's services and sell them off, don't take too much notice of what they are saying about future services

How would neotel go about upgrading to Revision B? Is it a whole process or what?

I am not sure of the step by step details, but it would most likely include upgrading of their receivers and possibly client side phones as well.

The main reason I think they will not upgrade any time soon is because even the major carriers like Sprint and Verizon are saying that they are not considering upgrading to Rev B. They claim that although Rev B is offering greater speed it will more than likely be replaced by Wimax. And we know that Neotel will be deploying WiMax in the future.

But Qualcomm recently said that Wimax is dead and will be replaced by 802.20. Apparently Qualcomm recently rolled out WiMax and they are having some major problems with it.

Please do note I don't work in the telecoms industry and I don't have any special insight to Neotel's plans. This is just information from a number of articles I have read.

I'm quite sure that they have said that they plan to upgrade to 3.1 mbps quite soon though (It was during 2008 iirc ). I'll try find the link.. EDIT: "This corresponds to peak speeds of 2.4 Mbps over EV-DO Rel 0 technology, and of 3.1 Mbps over EV-DO Rev A technology."

This answers my question. However I'm not really sure what that means wrt "upgrading" to 3.1mbps, which is in any case not much faster and I'm not sure of the effect on real world speeds.

in other words, 7 days full steam on a 384k line, makes sense. True Internet for one week a month. Progress

Huh.. so that's the point of the internet, to be downloading 24/7? No life, Just internet. :D

With an 8mb line I'd want around 50GB to be happy, but I probably wouldn't bother to find enough stuff to download most months.

From Neotel's site:

EV-DO Rev A offering peak 3.1 megabits per second, EV-DO Rev B in the near future which will deliver peak speeds in the region of 15 megabits per second and EV-DO Rev C in the longer term, which will deliver peak speeds of over 70 megabits per second.
