Details on ISP side.

Does anyone know what Sentech is offering on the ISP side of the deal? How many e-mail boxes, aliases, personal web space, etc.
 
Yeah, good question! I have been using it for two days now and I don't know the name of the mailserver. I should go and have a look. It seems they are just an ISP for the sake of making the life of the MyWireless subscribers easier, not for the sake of adding value added services. Some people that works there doesn't know what a newsserver is.
 
I like this, personally; if you want e-mail, webspace, news servers, etc. then by all means go to an ISP that offers that. But it really annoys me when I know that I'm paying for all that sort of junk, and have absolutely no use for it, so I kind of like the idea of being able to pay someone for an internet connection and nothing (or almost nothing) else.

Thats the reason I left Mweb when I had ISDN.
Their prices just kept rising all the time and when I queried it they gave me a long story about this fantastic package that it all includes.
What a load of junk - I just wanted a connection, the rest they can stick where the monkeys stick their nuts.

No SMTP relaying? So, erm.. how the hell do you send email? Hunt down an open relay server that is probably black listed? Or run your own?

Er...Sentech's mailserver (smtp.sentechsa.co.za) *is* blacklisted by SpamCop. So if you mail anyone at an ISP that uses SpamCop, like Metroweb.co.za, for example, you mail will bounce. Nice.
 
Mebbe someone with a 512K MyWireless offering can set up a mail server for everyone to use [:p]

Well, smtp.acenet.co.za doesnt require any authentication ;) It's a waiting to be used spam server.

Else, why dont you get your own domain and a friend with a virtual isp and tell him to host your mail, works for me ;)

I had an mweb account. Over the 2 years, I never used the educational stuff, never used the e-mail, and wifi hotspots. And well, I never used the dialup *doh*

So I closed it.
 
I can organize email with your own domain names for about 70 rand per month
 
I can do everything including hosting for 220 a month

plus, with my "email only", you get your own domain, 5 accounts, with 25 email aliases for no extra cost!

I run my own domain for e-mail purposes off my ISDN connection without paying anyone anything. Big whoop.

Whatever happened to RPM's idea of a forum dedicated to solving the Telko situation, Advertising free!!

Speaking of which, If you looking at a mail address for R60 a month, u can get a full backup dialup account from a multitude of ISP's and use pop authentication before sending, hence authenticating SMTP.
I'll give u all this for a whopping R999 per week.[8]

My point is, any joker can offer "email with your own domain names" for R70/month; make sure you know what you're ACTUALLY getting before you fork out ;)

Little thought about this, sentech gives you pop3 from what I understands. So you can receive.

So you can use your own smtp server.

And if you get someone (mydns) to do your dynamic domain hosting,
you could host your own pop3 server on your own domain(on your own machine).
I think that's suffiecient. Also check local visp's for dynamic dns.
I found a friend that I might get to do it very cheaply for me, and well, local is lekker.

Very many ISP's block e-mail that is sent via "home" connections, such as ADSL, dial-up, etc. It helps to curb the amount of spam that gets sent. I support this move, but this means that Sentech really have to put in place an SMTP server that allows outbound sending.

On the point of servers, LoneGunman, have you had any success with their nntp server yet?
