It does get pretty hot, I just blame it on the Lithium battery [:)]

Mine gets hot too. Other people I've spoken to just say theirs gets 'warm'. Not sure what an acceptable range is...

Mine is water cooled with thermal paste and a copper block.....

For real ?

I know cooling a CPU has some positive effects in terms of peformance.
Any peformance advantages in cooling the modem ?

Eeeek! Just picked up my modem. It is so hot that I literally can't touch it. No kidding... the thing is heading for meltdown! [:0]

[?]What is the cause? Is it just the Li-ion battery as suggested?

I had a look at the specs:
http://www.ipwireless.com/pdfs/card_modem.pdf
(The specs are for the "new version" desktop modem... but should hopefully be the same as the "old" Sentech modem.)

Temperature range: Normal operation +15°C to +35°C
Extreme: 0°C to +55°C degraded performance near limits
Storage: -20°C - +65°C

[?]What consitutes "degraded performace".
[?]Any suggestions / innovative ways of cooling the modem?

Another interesting tidbit of info that I found under Power:
"Trickle charging of the internal battery when connected to a USB port on a PC".

Hmmm... *Inkblot scratches his head*
[?]Does that mean that the modem will charge while connected via USB cable only (no power cable)?
Or does it mean that the "trickle charging" only slows the rate at which the battery drains... cause my modem battery only lasts about two hours max.

My guess would be that it is the transmitter power amplifier. Most signal amplifiers lose some (actually a large portion) of the power they generate through heat.

Would be interesting to see if the modem gets hotter when you are downloading at max speed and cooler when you are not doing anything.

Hi

Yup, it does get more hot when one is downloading.

Degraded performance, around 55 degrees is when I get disconnected and have to wait for it to cool down, before its usable.

Today I am getting a replacement modem, that hopefully wont be good for frying eggs on :)

This thing needs a heat sink or fan, Its crazy, ...anyways, I hope the replacement will run cool.

cheers

Hmm, I see everybody now opening up their modems to install CPU fans on them [:D]

ProAsm, maybe this explains why some people get disconnected often? Specially if people are leaving their modems in the window (i.e. the sun) for a better signal...

ajax, yes, this amongst other things is all being looked into atm regarding connection and disconnection problems.
I'm surprised there aren't any small holes in the modem for ventilation as it sure does get kinda hot.

Would the suction caps that come with the Sentech modem help in cooling the modem by lifting it off of the surface? I'm just asking because I don't use them and now I'm worried that the modem is overheating.
