Hello all,

I have got my ethernet cable - I tried using the smoothwall thing but it seems to not really communicate with the modem.

The plugs are all right, the network is okay.

Is there some way I can use Windows to just make sure that the ethernet cable is working? How?

Donovan,

Sounds like you're not plugging the ethernet cable into the right plug.
Look on your hub/router for a switch (Uplink) and then for a specific port with maybe an asterix, plug the sukka in there and then into the modem, hopefully the green light will come on. I had the same problem & got this help (free) from PSI Logo (PC shop) in Linksfield, they are great so shop there!
It's about twisted pairs and other wonderful things!
Hope this helps. It did sort out my problem.
PS Don't know what 'smoothwall' is - I will look around.

Howdy all (again),

I'm a dumbass. I got it working under windows, so it's not the cable. Going to try through the linux box again now... wierd.

I guess your plugging it right into the back of the RED NIC on your smoothwall box ?

You need to reset the modem with it plugged in so the green light on the box on the cable goes on.

If you still don't have any luck, gimme a shout.

My smoothwall has been running perfect for a month.

Yup, all connected correctly.

What I ended up deciding to do is just plug it straight into my hub, and set up PPPoE connections on both other PC's, and internet connection sharing on the one.

We rarely all use the internet at the same time, so having a server at this time will be overkill. This works much nicer :-)

BTW, I mounted my patch antenna (in a protective jiffy bag) in the loft... signal is solid stable now. Much better [8D]

Hehe yeh except for the epitome of security that is WINDOWS XP UBER FIREWALL.
