Thread: Neotel in Bloemfontein

  1. #1

    Smile Neotel in Bloemfontein

I asked around and found out that Neotel is busy laying fiber in bloem. They have 6 cables going into the city and it splits off until only 2 stop in Langenhoven Park. Unfortunately there are no basestations yet

What I also heard was that we will get a 10Gb/s fiber from joburg passing through to cape town.

    Not too shabby

And you're excited... why? Coz it don't mean **** until they put up base stations, and at the rate they're going it'll by the time Zuma is kicked out of the ANC for being a power hog... *whistle*

Does anyone have more information on which areas in Bloemfontein will be covered?

I'm living approx. 7km out of bloem, on the northern side. Telkom have removed the physical cabling we had for landlines, and replaced our telephone systems with Radio Frequency transceivers. So, no 3G or iBurst (no reception), AND no ADSL :( which really sucks.

I doubt that they would cover 7km out of bloem. I'm pretty sure that you should get 3G signal with either vodacom or MTN at least. If not, you could always go ask them nicely to upgrade your tower?

Do you think that the digging by the N1 in Nelson Mandela ave is for Neotel fibre? I think I saw orange cabling

:P Well, then I'm opting for Cape Town next year anyway lol. Oh well, I tried. Its so weird around this area, Vodacom's signal does not stay constant. There was one week that I had EDGE speeds. But only that once. Now I am stuck again with GPRS

I'm sure if you gave vodacom a call they would figure out what's up with it

OT: Your blog has a cool background btw ^^

    Still no signs of neotel?

    @Nuvolari
BLUG seems like a cool idea, but I'm not socially very interactive Plus I doubt you'd like a future Windows 7 owner there

Well, at present I would like it if anyone can join, because it seems that bloem people don't want to participate in group stuff I know about 6 people that use Ubuntu frequently, so it's worth a try. You can join if you want to Maybe we should set up cubicles so we can accomodate socially shy people, like myself hehe. Hmm, I think Windows 7 will have a hard time to be making it's way into people's homes, especially now in the hard times.

I read a post today on slashdot.org where the author explained what happened/is happening in his country with M$. Not good.

    Default Neotel vans in bloem

On two occasions I saw a neotel van in bloem. First was about two/three months ago in second ave. (right next to the bottle store) hehe. This was some kind of technician and not just some white collar person.

Second sighting was about two weeks ago at the waterfront parking (second ave side)

If only they could give you some kind of rough indication as to when we can expect something in bloem one can maybe plan a bit better. Do you commit to a 24 month contract now? or would neotel be up in bloem before then?

Never commit to a 24 month contract when it comes to internet. Especially not now with Seacom bandwidth coming into effect, ISPs dropping prices etc. Stay on a month-to-month subscription, you won't regret it!
