I had the Sentech product since Feb and it never worked since I get no signal according to the distance calculator I am 9km from the nearest tower.

Sentech people said I must wait for the Cent tower to become operational and I might get signal

I would like to know if a high gain antenna would work?

I am now tired of waiting do you think I must return the product.

Do any of you guys know when MTN 3G solution is coming out and what the price range will be.

As you are further than 6km away... a high gain antenna won't help.
The system is designed not to operate further than that... irrespective
of what antenna you have.
Also, MTN are keeping their pricing under wraps for now…. however it
is presumably going to be another “pay per packet” solution aimed at the
business community (MTN’s target market) .
(MTN will make an announcement on 23 June)

Unfortunately, you won't be able to connect that far away. The towers only allow users to connect if they are within the 5.7km footprint. Maybe you could get away with 6km, but not 9km. A high gain antenna won't shorten the distance.

I got my modem just before the Cape Town launch date of 29 march. When they delayed the launch. I phoned them to put my account on hold (They also gave me the option to cancel it. If I were you I would freeze my account, hold on the the modem and wait. Chances are that of you are in Gauteng, you will be covered within the next 3-6 months.

Dont get your hopes up with the MTN 3G solution. They will most likely charge per megabyte. I also think they will stay with cellphone related services. At least initially. For the next year you will basicly have two viable options: Sentech, Telkom ADSL.

An alternative to the 3G solutions, is the WBS's offering which posted by rpm today:

There are rumours the product could be available as early as October.
