...and so far it seems pretty nice...

Installed it on my Proline U100 (MSI Wind).

Problem is wifi doesn't work, but I am looking for a Dell 1490 WiFi card (if anyone knows where I can get one, or has one, please let me know), and also the headphone jack... :(

But otherwise looks pretty good.

No apparently there are no drivers for the mac for the card that comes with the MSI Wind.

....ah there is a way to get the audio jack to work...

So now it's just the new wifi card.

Looking at the Mac Mini, the price is currently about 12% more expensive then it should be. A few months back, the rand was just under 8 to the $. It's now about 20% worse off (R9.70). The Mac Mini price has gone from R5999 to R7999 (ignoring the quick move to R8999). Thats a price increase of around 32% up on a price that was already inflated. At present exchange rates, the price of the Mac Mini should be R5800 so we are paying a premium of around 37.5%.

I have been using OSX for a couple of days now, and while it is pretty cool, I fail to see what all the fuss is about. I can work just as productivley on my linux or windows installation, and have just as much fun. It is certainly a very good OS, but I don't think it is the end all as people make it out to be. When you factor in the artificial high price of the hardware to run it legally, it starts looking like a fail :( Nice OS, overpriced hardware. The biggest thing going for it is that it is pretty :-)

While I'm ranting, here is another piece of blasphemy:
Most main stream operating sytems are actually quite good (Linux, Windows, OSX) all with their strengths and weaknesses. I currently work with Vista and Ubuntu and fairly happy with both. People just like to complain about an OS because they can and it's the in thing to do. Some guy goes on a vista bashing spree, and the rest follow. Same goes for linux.

The biggest thing going for it is that it is rock solid. That's what you get when the software manufacturer controls the hardware manufacturing. ;)

For me the best thing about osx is the way it manages applications, just drag & drop. My home folder is on a separate partition and I format every few months Apple release a new combo update, all I do after a clean install is point my user account to my home partition and all my apps are there no need to install anything.

I'll sell you my macbook, it had a piece of plastic that cracked and broke off. This is normal for the crackbook models which Is why I want the new aluminum macbooks.

Just kidding though, Macs are not cheap I know :o

I have a problem with this "overpriced" complaint that always goes around. As for anything, you pay for quality. Mac is always very decent. When I was comparing laptops I found the R12k (for a 120GB, 1GB RAM, core 2 duo, Built in webcam, near high def lcd monitor) a pretty competitive price. :rolleyes:

And when you look at things like iPods, well IMO they are worth every cent. A lot more than most mp3/4 players, but for the software integration, the solidness, the support..its just so worth it. As is the scenario with all Mac products.

So for me, Mac is quality, and if the premium is there because you know in 5 years your machine wont have gone through 50 viruses, crashes weekly and has had its third hardware upgrade. okay as for ubuntu...ubuntu FTW too.

Just my humble opinion :D

Why on earth would you want to do that? :confused:
 
I know it's not necessary but sometimes I try out applications that mess with system files and like to start with a fresh install afterward.

That is a half decent price. But compare mac/ipod prices with hardware currently on the market. Quality wise, I think my HP laptop is just as solid as any Mac. On the contrary, I bought the 4G Ipod photo when they came out, and it was swapped out twice due to hardware failure (although I would not generalise this failure to all Apple products). I see a Macbook pro now starts at R24000, and to match the HP laptop I'm using now, I would have to get the one that costs R32000. The HP one is about R20000, so that is a R12000 difference, basically the price of another mid-upper range non Mac laptop. As for ipod software integration, that what is actaully counting against it at the moment (for me anyway). Itunes is not my favourite piece of software, and I don't see why apple decided that you need syncing software instead of just copying files to the device directly. The music DB that the ipod uses means any other software that wants to sync needs to edit this for anything to work. When a new revision of the ipod comes out, they have to figure things out again since apple does not want to share the info for syncing the ipod. A lot of media players will let you copy files directly to the device, and the player will update it's own db.

If the price difference is worth it or not, I don't know. I still think the price is artificially high. Same goes for the Ipod. If it was not for this, I would have bought a Macbook long ago.

Pooky is rather rich for a school kiddy is he not, wii, wind, xbox, iphone etc - seems fishy...
 
@ Nuro. Some good points. I guess I am just very happy with what I have now. Some of my friends have HPs and they do like them a lot too.

And an illegal version of OSX.
Can't help him with problems then, that is just a very wrong thing to do.
 
I'm also concerned about OSX pirating, worried Apple will be forced to use some sort of activation in future to prevent piracy. Nice thing about OSX is no need for a CD key or activation.
