Freaking teklom!

If you install a new telephone line and an ADSL at the same time, you're charged:
- R225.50 (Line install)
- R543.91 (ADSL install) installation costs.
= R769.41 On install costs.

BUT .. if you install the teklom line only.
- R225.50 (Line install)

And, then, once the line is installed, call them and ask for ADSL self-install activation, you get the ADSL install bit free.

This saves you R543.91.

But, it also forces you to make more work for the technician cos now he has to go back to the exchange to plug your ADSL in after just having connected your phone line.

MORONZ!

How do you get that R225.50? They want to charge me R425.50

They told me they can drop the R425.50 if I take a doBroadband, then I only need to pay some insane amount for the ADSL install. AND I still need to buy a modem.

It's frustrating how often a companies pricing structure just makes no sense. In fact, it sometimes is nonsense!

You can either maximise their errors, or suffer and pay more, depending on what the inconsistencies are. It is like going to a pizza place, ordering a diy pizza with the same ingredients as a pre-thought up one, and either getting it for cheaper, or paying through your arse.

Make the techie do the work- stuff the self install.

In fact, ask 20 min later for the same techie to be sent around!

If you do the "DOBROADBAND" you get a free modem

I had the same problem as Stoke. SHoudl have ordered the analog line first & then ask for upgrade to ADSL with self install. Anyway, I got the ADSL monthly rental transferred to the wholesale account of the ISP - slightly cheaper than Telkom & get my ADSL Internet from them as well. Still have to pay the analog line rental myself.

Simplest way I found it to be done if you don't want to be bound by any contract.

Closer 2 or higher - free installation. Closer 2 comes in at R145 (includes the analog line rental of R111 or thereabouts)
Then wait for a day and get the self install.
Get your own ISP. (Mine being Cybersmart at R125 for 3gigs) and you're off.

No installation charges, no contracts and as little interaction with Telscum as possible.
WA and Cybersmart have the more competitive all-in-one packages, but you're stuck with a locked router.

EDIT: Just be sure to find out if there are ports available at your exchange when going this route.
It's gonna suck if you go through and then want the self install and no DSL in your area ;)
