Why not have all the information on the website ffs!
Why would I want to waste more time going into a branch?

As for:
With an exclusive range of benefits such as inContact, eBucks and free Online, Telephone and Cellphone Banking subscriptions,

The subscription is free, but what about transacting online?
That statement seems a bit ambigious or deceptive.

So anyway.
I'm pissed off with ABSA and having to pay R5.50 everytime I swipe at a POS or go to the ATM.
R300 a month in bank charges is fscked up and it's time for a change.

Reading the Compeition Commision's report on banking and the reasons why people don't change banks or rather make the effort to change banks is so true.

It's a time consuming endeavour and weighing up the options is almost impossible as there is no uniform manner in which to compare the Big4.

So with the recent hype that has been surrounding this FNB offer, is it any good?
Are there those of you that are making use of it?

Thanks.

Free debit card swiping. R2.25 to draw at their ATMs. R6.50 to draw at any other banks ATM (which might not be supercheap, but sure makes it easy since you can use ANY banks ATM and its not killer fees like with the Big4).

Free internet banking (well, you must spend the once off R125 for the dongle). R3.50 monthly fee (which will pay for itself if you have at least R400 in the account due to the good interest rate.)

Those rates seem good - what is the internet banking like?
EDIT: And what's up with the dongle?

Hey, I am with Capitec for quite some time now and I must congratulate them. Yes there are a few hick ups here and there but overall they are the cheapest. And yes, I am with Fnb too. Years ago I used Boland, but that's like ages ago. Capitec and Fnb work for me just fine. I can't believe it - there are lots and lots of suckers out there, banking with some other motherfu***ers. Southafricans deserve to pay such high banking fees ! why? Because they want to.

Instead of a onetime password you get on your cell, you press the button on the dongle (maybe I should rather say token) and it shows you a code (which changes about once a minute) which you use to logon to internet banking. It has a key chain thingy.

The internet banking is pretty basic and a bit rudimentery. Not as slick as my Standard Bank, but not much worse than ABSAs one.

That's pretty nifty, but not something that you'd want to lose
Well you still have your password to back you up.
Cut's out the cost of an SMS then?

Some of the things I like:

You can get two debit order or internet banking transactions for the price of one of those transactions Standard Bank.

Proper interest rate, believe me, you'll get R0.40 cent if you have R45 in there. Thats won't cover the monthly fee, so thats why I said if you have R400 the amount of money won't slowly dissapear.

Well, if you lose it you just get a new one (for R125). You have a User ID and a password too and you need to use all 3 to logon.

I can't seem to find FNB's pricing for Online transactions.
Stuff like:
  • Interaccount transfer
  • Pay beneficiary
  • Create, amend or delete stop order

Capitec's is listed as follows:
  • Interaccount transfer - R1.75
  • Pay beneficiary - R1.75
  • Create, amend or delete stop order - R2.50

On the pricing for notifications sent, Capitec comes in better than FNB.
Capitec:
  • SMS payment notification - R0.40
  • Email payment notification - R0.40
  • Fax payment notification - R2.50

vs

FNB
  • SMS payment notification - R0.75
  • Email payment notification - R0.50
  • Fax payment notification - R3.50

I use the FNB Super Saver account - no monthly service charge if the balance remains >R6000 and you get 6 free transactions per month, and thereafter each transaction is charged at R6.50.

Why can't they be free of charges like my HSBC account in the UK ?

PS. FNB also have the code generating device "DigiTag".

I dont think they're issuing it any longer though.

I have moved to the unlimited account a few months ago. And I really pay only R66 except for Sms/fax/email notifications. I also linked everything to ebucks and I actually earn more ebucks than I pay in bank charges! I also linked my petrol card to my cheque account and those transactions are also free!

All banks are teh same, but I must sat Capitec sounds good and they seem relatively new, worth looking into.

I just want to go into FNB and get some more info on the internet banking charges and notifications and weigh them up against Capitec.

If I can find the time I'll have opened a new account before the year comes to a close.

I used to use a DigiTag in 05/06 but ditched it for the OTP in 07. So, for those who still have their DTs can still logon using them.

To be honest, I am still stuck with FNB simply due to the convenience. For example, IMO nothing beats the convenience of using Ellphone banking (*120*321#) whereby one can buy airtime (cellular/ telkom/ etc), pay traffic fines, do normal banking (transfers/ payments/ statements/ etc). So up until CapiTecBank gets a major facelift (mainly internet banking), (oh, and I wonder if they also have Credit card and PetroCard facilities?)then I will join them, say in about 4-8mths or so. I still have my STD Bank account, which is actually my first bank account but I only use it as an investment account (though its a savings), I havent used it in over a year now.
