Personally why would he even feel the need to defend the italian league they are good but just not good enough this year... same goes for every team... If united didn't win the CL league and Barc wins it doesn't mean the english teams are useless...

Italian clubs under achieved but that's hardly a crisis. The english clubs were slightly better than the italian clubs this year.
Why Platini sees the need to enter this debate I have no idea, he should have his hands full with kissing blatter's ass.

Stefan9 my man... I like your viewoint on most things Italian, but even your rose tinted specs can't cover up the gaping holes in the Italian game. They lack just about anything top class. They don't have the attacking flair the Spaniards do, they lack the grit and commitment of the English (who have changed remarkably in the last ten or so years, transforming their top teams to be tactically flawless as well... which was lacking earlier...) and they are OLD. No new blood is being brought into the Italian league. Either bought or blooded (in the case of homegrown talent) into the top tier...
Cassano is not at a big club, while of the top class youth, only Pato is really making any head way. Giovinco is being marginalized, despite being a potenital world beater which says it all really... While Balotelli and Santon may be getting their chances at Inter, do you see the same thing happening at Fio, Milan or Juve? It's up to the lower caste to bring them and they lack the Chamions League expiernace that their compatriots on other countries are getting.

If they sides are so lacking in your opinions then why didn't any of the sides get thrashed. Juve went out by 1-0 goal vs chelsea,roma went out on penalties and inter went out by 2-0 but had their chances. If your sides are so superior then explain why the margin of victory wasn't greater??
We are slightly behind the english, I don't agree on the spanish sides barca may be ahead but I fancy the serie a sides against the other la liga teams.
Talking about young talent getting their chance. How many under 21's year olds english players are playing for the top 4 in england. By my reckoning there are none this season. While juve have marchiso and giovinco and inter has balotelli and santon plus bolzoni is part of the inter squad ( another under 21 italian player) and will have aquafresca back from his loan spell at cagliari next season.
There is a gap between the english sides and the Italian sides at the moment but I don't think its as big as some people would like to think.

Someone always dominates, sometimes it's the Spanish, sometimes it's the Italians and sometimes (like now for example) it's the British teams. Nothing to it I think.

The Italian League is far behind the EPL fiscally, organizationally and marketing-wise. This impacts the teams - badly. Don;t tell me the Italians don't have a problem with ageing - look at the national team.
The English might not be bringing English talent through, but they are bringing youth through in general (well... except Chelsea tbf) so it's not like they aren't doing anything.
Look at the Italian under 21 performances internationally compared to the english under 21's performance. There's a lot of guys who could play for Italy right now youngster like ballotelli,giovinco,santon,marchiso,ect but Lippi prefers to stick with experience. Its not a case of the team not having the talent its the stubbornness of Lippi but then Lippi has won the wc so who am I to doubt him.
On the financial strenght of the league I agree with you that the english league does it better than anyone else .
I am not disputing the english teams being in front what I dispute is that its a massive crisis for italian football as some are calling it. I believe we have issues but they are not as big as some would like to think.

Italian *club* football is going through a downturn not a crisis. Platini needs to shut up, what is up with senior football administrators, Blatter, Platini, Issa Hayatu (the idiot from Africa) they just have this constant stream of garbage they feel necessary to share with the world.
Guys, you are ex-footballers, not exactly known for your mental prowess. Do yourself a favour and put a sock in it. If we wanted an intelligent opinion about something, we would be to ask someone with intelligence about it.
Now back to Italian club football, Italian club football does not have the financial muscle of the EPL, and it does not have the crowds. It is obviously suffering in Europe. It has lost the marketing war and is cast as defensive and slow. Slow I agree with, defensive I don't - Mancini and Prandelli amongst others would sometimes put on formations of 2-4-4 - yes four strikers when required. 4-3-3 with 3 out and out strikers are frequently seen in Serie A, how is that defensive? There is a difference between being able to defend well and being defensive. Another thing I don't like about Italian club football (besides its incredible slowness) is that they are too easily out muscled, the refs give fouls for anything, including but not limited to breathing on another player. Alex del Piero for instance spends more time on his backside than on his feet - he only gets up when it is time to take a free kick.
In England teams frequently put 11 men behind the ball and try and stop the other team from playing. But that's not defensive, why, because it happens in England. They also have very little skill outside the top four / five.
Italy also have a relatively huge pool of footballing talent. They are probably only behind Brazil and France when it comes to producing talented footballers - Lippi has about 35 top class players he can choose from. As for England, honestly I doubt Capello even has eleven. The players Capello has at his disposal are often overhyped at club level and useless at international level.
Another thing, Italian club football produces high quality coaches, see the coaches of England and Ireland, also 3 out of the top four teams in the Italian league are coached by Italians. Make that zero for the EPL.
Let's face it, England gets excited when they beat Andorra, while Italy honestly expects to beat Brazil. That is the real difference between the two countries.
