I got a phonecall from Sentech to confirm my cancellation 4-5 weeks after I logged the call at the helpdesk. So I confirmed the account, and then cancelled my cancellation.....

Am I crazy? Maybe. But 30Gb+ intl in 3 weeks sorta convinced me otherwise. I would never be able to do this with an adsl connection unless telkom drops the 3GB cap.

You should have cancelled, even though you got 3 weeks of semi-good speeds, its the only thing these bastards will listen to, if their pockets get empty... they will HAVE to improve SOMEHOW to SURVIVE

LOL, well...it's not like I can get ADSL being on a fibre optic exchange and all. And I'm sure as hell ain't getting iBurst until they've proven themselves.
I do have ISDN, which is fine for my gaming needs.
 
nonroker, you can cancel iburst no problem, plus they're only around 460 in their prelaunch phase

you truely were crazy/dumb...etc etc
 
noone, I might be getting iburst tomorrow - I hope it is as good as you make it out to be - there must be a 14 day cancellation clause if you are not satisfied!?

nonroker... I did the same thing. I canclled my cancellation cuz I heard about the 3GB cap on iBurst.

Fact is I use Sentech for web development 80% and the speeds are an avergae of 100kbs on a 128MW which is pretty good. International is crap but last month I pulled close to 8GB without even trying... mainly multi-threading...
THe other night I pulled 400MB downloads from a site using GetRIght... so if you get wise and use some tools its not bad... but when it comes to surfing it turns broadband into boredband.

but yeah R650.00 I am making sure I scrape that 10GB soft cap...
if they ever phone me about abuse I am gonna tell em to hold on and just leave the phone in my drawer.

BUt I am seriously conisdering getting iBurst but I think I will wait. Somehow I think iBUrst is going to struggle as well... running an ISP in this country with Telkom around is stupid.

nonroker & vowthorn, you guys are at least showing an ability to objectively look at a change in the status quo and, upon seeing that it benefits you, change direction. This is the kind of thing that a reasonable and rational person does. What *isn't* even slightly close to rational is hysterical ranting by our friend noone here- that's just asinine and, quite frankly, a piss-poor attempt at trying to rally any free-thinking person to whatever Quixotic crusade he thinks he's on.

noone, you've unsubscribed from MyWi- well, bully for you. Apparently it's made you deliriously happy and, hey, maybe WBS *will* even get it right- time will tell. In the meantime, your shrill, childish antics in the MyWi forums impress ..how shall I put this... no one.
 
Ok - I am particularly angry now having just watched a 940Kb email upload at 0.95Kb/s. This is to my local mweb mailbox!!

THERE IS NO CHANGE IN THE STATUS QUO - THIS SERVICE IS **** !! What advance to you expect me to take of the status quo !!!

I posted a while back about this.
I did an experiment. With a weak signal, uploads were crap and they seriously hurt downloads. Increased signal with a pringles can, and those issues went away. What's your signal strength, and more importantly, what's your signal strength from the tower, this is important, and the stupid sentech software don't tell you what this is.
 
nonroker, this tends to corroborate my view- MyWi works fab ..when it's got good signal. About the software not telling you- I believe you're not entirely correct there; after launching the app (and it kickss the modem into a tower seek (on the latest firmware)), you can mouseover the tower graphic on the network tab and it'll briefly show you signal strength, tower number and RCSP & ISCP data (in -xx dBm). Sure it's not great and ProAsm's app is infinitely superior -but it is there.

embittered2, as the man suggests- dig up your signal data and let's work from there..
 
If the dialer doesn't show the info, you might be running pre V5.x versions of UEStatus.exe and ipwcomm.dll. I got mine off the unofficial 5.0.1.40y (full package). Shout if you want to give them a try (obviously backing up your current versions first). About 900K zipped, unless someone has them hosted somewhere.

I agree with Bdt. Since I increased my signal strength from 10% to 30% and the ber now up to 71% things have improved. Lately I am actually enjoying using the computer (actually the guy who invented the computer should be shot..another subject another time) and mywireless.
 
Yea, mywireless is working wonderfully - I just don't know what to do with all this bandwidth - sometimes I get as much as 20kbps which is almost ten percent of of the advertised 256k package speed! And now that nothing apart from browsing works, I have so much more time on my hands. It's also quite handy that pages like this on myadsl take 2mins to load - it gives you more time to mentally compose your response to all the mindless twats who wax lyrical about how great their sentech connection is...

bdt, I know the SW shows signal strength, but that signal strength is the signal the modem receives. We need to see the signal that the tower receives from our modems. With the old Orinoco WiFi cards that was called the "Test Partner" signal. I you have great receive signal, but your "test partner" signal is low, then your uploads will suffer. And if the uploads suffer, the connection's overall speed goes down the tubes, especially when you are uploading, like with torrents/kazaa/emule etc where upload is part of the whole p2p thing.
 
nonroker- NOW I begin to get a handle on your angle..! I see your point that the dialer apps give us only our half of the signal strengh numbers, ie OUR dBm signal level, etc. That said, IMO we have to turn to logic and reasoning to take it further:

As a simply expressed ideal, I go for flat-out as much signal as I can get- typically by throwing up a Big-Ass™ antenna of some sorts *g*. This gives the modem on MY end really good hearing and we get a strong signal for the tower-to-modem leg. And here's where inference comes into it- by using an antenna I *know* that I'm sending out a better quality signal so I can predict that I'm pumping a better quality signal for that all-important modem-to-tower leg you're referring to. Of course this is all subjective opinion based on possibly shaky logic but the behaviour of the sites I've put up where I know there to be good quality signal levels would tend to suggest I may be onto something here.
 
whistleblower: I won't patronise you with any "I feel your pain" nonsense because I simply don't ..feel your pain, that is. I can say with confidence that if you make the effort to give MyWi a steady, quality signal it has the tendency to get remarkably dependable -and, quite frankly, HUMS with all the usual protocols. And I know this because not only does mine work a charm; so, pretty much, does everyone else's where I've put up a BigAss™ antenna ..or at least one that ensures decent signal quality.

So here's a thought- why don't you mentally compose yourself off your arse and DO something about it?

I can't agree, at least not in my experience. Even with very low signal where I am now (average of 2%, occasionally if I'm lucky it will go up to 4%) I can get FULL SPEEDS (both upload AND download running at full speed *simultaneously*) ... but *only* for local bandwidth, international is poor, typically 2-4KB/s. Whether uploading or downloading doesn't make much difference to either one. I can see from traffic analysis that there is a bit more packet loss but that this is not really affecting (local) throughput. How can it have anything to do with signal strength if the difference (in my case at least) is between local and international bandwidth? That all happens much further upstream.

I don't get disconnected often either. Perhaps there are different types of "poor signals": "low but stable" and "not quite as low but unstable/flaky", and perhaps the former works better than the latter.

Let's see.. I am 1,5km away from a tower, I get good speeds uploading and downloading.... from the sentech website, that is. I get really crap speeds internationally and even local has degraded a lot recently. I cannot use IRC, NNTP, online gaming or any p2p protocol whatsoever (I mean I REALLY cannot use these protocols at all, not just that they are slow, they just freeze after minutes).

Ah, but wait I know what the problem is - I haven't shelled out R2500 to stick a bloody great antennae on my roof in the hope that it will suddenly make international browsing as fast as local and all the other protocols will work!

If I'm well within a tower's coverage area and nowhere near the fringes I fail to see why I should have to fork out even more money for an antenna - if that really is necessary then the onus is on sensuck to provide it, as it essentially means their modem does not work as per specifications.
 
Turtle, it's very possible that it's a combination of things.
Interferrence also plays a big role. Maybe you don't have any other MyWi users nearby or something.

On the intl speeds, I agree with you that single threads are round about 2-6KB/s, but multithread that download, and you get full speeds internationally.
I know, as I've been downloading full speed from the UK for the last 4+ weeks non stop.
