hopefully heaven but probably hell
Okay... Friday 10pm it starts... No tower outage or anything. My machine has been connected to sentech from about 6pm... MySignal does not report a tower going down...

But I jump on the net at about 10pm and I go to a forum I usually go to and expect the long wait for the threads to load... when BAM... under 3 seconds everything is laoded... OKAY... maybe this stuff's cached.

Click on a thread and BAM 3 seconds new thread opens up.

Okay Sentech is actually working now... too fast... weird...
So I do a speed test and BAM Avg 400KB/s on a MW128... then I reckon... okay must be an outage. Investigate. I come to MY Adsl and nothing...

Okay.

So I start surfing... and I notice USA sites are flying down. UK sites are sleeping... Actually many european sites are SLOW... the normal Sentech speed.

Okay.

Go to www.macromedia.com nothing cached and the site loads in under 6 seconds. Hrmm... statr a download from there. 17KB for about 5 seconds then all of a sudden network usage is capped drops to 2.5KB.

I am wandering if Sentech are not trying out some daft scheme by allowing a burst of traffic for new requests and then if it somehow "detects" a download it chokes it?

Cuz from network usage graphs it seems that way even with these insane speeds... which is making browsing cool.

I tried a multithread download and the same thing. It gets choked but obvioulsy with multiple threads I am getting about 7-8KB...

Anyway its now 1:30am and still experiencing this and wandering if business satelite traffic stops on Fridays hence making MW currrently on SAttelite BW faster on the weekends?

261.2 Kbps
(32.65 KBps)

the above speed test was done now.

INSANE... but cool :)

pfft... bastards... So much for "unlimited"! That connection is as limited as can be without saying it has a cap on! [:)]

Sucktech no more... I'm now an iBurster! hmmmm... bandwidth... [:D]</div id="right"></i></font id="size1">

My FTP speeds have suddenly gone from &lt;2KB/s to over 9KB/s on a 128k package... go figure. Last night before I went to bed it was so slow I could barely browse the net.

okay 12:00 noon on saturday and guess what... MW is farking flying... it has issues... but damn it seems 'fixed' however I will only believe this when they can carry on with these speeds for atleast a week or longer.

153.92 Kbps
(19.24 KBps)
The above is a US based speed test

running 10s outbound test (client to server) . . . . . 104.70Kb/s
running 10s inbound test (server to client) . . . . . . 85.70kb/s
the above is Stanford speed test

but what definelty happens is after 10 seconds the connection is throttled down. I am seeing this
on larger speed tests... Network usage will start at about 60% and stay there... then all of a sudden
it drop to 13% and does not move up or down.

I have never seen network usage graphs like this on Sentech... The spiking is gone but it seems more
solid... Whatever they are doing is a step in the right direction.

Unless my tower has finally been fixed. Or maybe the are biting the bullet and have bought **** loads of bandwidth.

But Peridition... at this stage I think you are right the scary thing is they have probably done nothing.

Your PC is connected to a Dial-up Modem

Must be your tower LOL

I know why it's fast! It's 'cos I cancelled! Murphy's law! Just as I cancel, they'll fix it! :)

well what'va the reason I like this

Its like buying shares. Just when you have had enough because they have lost so much value, then you sell and wham, the price sky rockets, and then just as you think its time to get in again, the price plummets.

The CUG got out at the bottom, this is just enticing them, and when the speeds are really at their best, and the CUG decide to join again, the speeds are going to drop. So moral of the story, CUG keep away:)

All comments are said in jest and do not represent my or anyone else's opinion:)

okat it seems sentech seem to have done something really weird here and I would like to know if anyone else is experiencing this...

I have got great speeds. Browsing is fast however if you start a download... even a multi thread download it eventually drops from about 90-95% network usage to a solid 20%. If I pause the download wait a bit and then resume the download then it shoots back up to 90% for about 10-20 seconds before it gets choked again...

Perhpas this is their poor answer to International BW problems...

This doesnt happen with local downloads... This kind of behaviour also occurs with internaitonal flash driven sites where you see preloaders shooting up and eveutally the slow down because Sentech's wonderful system locks down on the download.

Pretty disgusting solution!!!!!!

I dont know... I think Sentech are owned by the goverment which make sense cuz they are just
as effecient and as customer foccussed as home affairs or city power.

what needs to happen is sentechs site needs to be hacked...

Yep - some great speeds today - like it was when I first got it.
Oh well, my ADSL should be installed next week = 3 times the speed.

Just my luck that Sentech finally gets it right and everyone has good speeds from now on.
But I dought it - it won't last. It never has before.

ADSL has it's problems, as I've noted on my work connection - every day we get a minute or two every other hour where it's just totally offline. Sometimes the contention ratio really works against you for a few hours.

Anyway, I'm off to quickly download - er - well I don't really know, something big before the speed drops ?

Hey vowthorn, I want to confirm your experience. Since Friday I have been getting surfing download speeds of 100 to 107 kbits/sec (as measured by TCP/IQ). It took me right back to those halcyon days of March and April.

Downloading files also as you describe: a crazy burst of speed (so it can be done!), then slows right down. I'll get half the file in the first minute or so, then 9 minutes to get the other half. (Perhaps that crazy burst is called iburst? [;)] Or perhaps everyone has left the building...)
