Am I correct in saying that governmint have sold off this country's telecoms infrastructure?

I mean, governmint have to provide the country's infrastructure. i.e. Electricity, Water, Roads ...

That's their excuse for forcing us to pay taxes.

If the above is true, then governmint had no right to sell our communication infrastructure.

If we setup a group lawsuit, we should be able to sue governmint for either:
- blatant theft, or
- not providing the required infrastructure, but taxing us as if they were.

And if either of these are succesful, we could then sue individuals who'se signatures appear on the paperwork, and then use the resulting money to setup a non profit telecoms infrastructure, and make it law that that infrastructure is the only one that can be used. And then give the infrastructure back to the country.

I mean, what they've done is the same as selling our roads.

Am I way off the mark here?

Mkay - seriously, if ICASA have no power, I say we get rid of them.
What's the point of an organisation that has no say anyway?
We just sent quite a lot of documents via email to ICASA. Lets see them flex their muscle.
If they don't do anything useful then we must declare a vote of no confidence and communicate directly with Ivy. Seeing that governmint won't be paying for ICASA anymore, we'll just organise a boycott on ICASA and they'll dissapear.

All governments are in service of the public. Even the bad ones. It is said that people always get the government they deserve because in them resides the power to overthrow it. A dictatorship can only remain so until a popular revolt succeeds.

Our government is not free from these and other rules (that I did not mention because it is a philosophical treatise) because it survives only as long as the masses of the country allow it to. This government has made some terrible mistakes. ISCOR is a huge example of how inexperienced and young this government really is. Personally I regard it as unforgivable but other people tell me to give it time. I don't think I have a choice. :)

Telkom is severely mismanaged! The company should have become its own competition but the greed of a handful of people privatized it without competition and now we have huge problems. It doesn't take a genius to figure these things out and you do not have to be an economist to understand the impact of this. The simple truth is, Telkom should have been split up into 3 or 4 smaller companies who from the get go shoulda been forced to compete.

That's a big problem with developing countries, all bordering around greed/corruption/nepotism.

A short term goal of success for the minority for a short period of time or,
a long term goal of success for the majority for a long period of time.

It depends on the vision of our leaders - lets face it, it's all too easy to focus on what's right in front of you. It's a far harder path to focus on the bigger picture.

In the case of Telkom, the huge profit margins they are making now are simply not sustainable in the long term. We have a situation where the majority of the people can only afford the most basic of telecomms services and yet this monopoly ups the price of local calls, line rentals etc., completely bucking the international trend.

This is plain and simply a case of a short sighted goal for the benefit of a minority.
