I see Incredible Connection is selling the macbook for R11999 .... how can they be R1000 cheaper than the mac shop?

i'm a PC owner and will probably always prefer a PC for my desktop for games etc. but i wanted to get a macbook for my university assignments and work... what puts me majorly off mac though is the fact that i get the feeling that core are ripping us off ... i've got the 13k to spend on a macbook today but i don't like being ripped off, so i may just go the alienware route for my mobile PC.

Geforce 9400m, meaning it must be one of the new macbooks... i think they got the DDR3 part wrong and the 160gb h/drive

Mac's are a rip-off full stop, on special or not.

I dig them, I really do but damned if I am paying 11K plus for what? A white/silver laptop that runs MacOS? Must be kidding. For the same price I can buy a seriously nice Vaio. Much better IMO.

If only Mac would come to the party and compete price wise with the laptops of today, they would get WAY more followers.

I think that prices of pc laptop are just as high. I can show you pc laptops that cost over R30 000 and the problem is that they still run Windows. Now when we look at Windows vs Mac OSX you will see that OSX always wins hands down. Maybe you should research this abit more.

Please show me a Mac for under R10k? No you cant can you?

Please explain to us how a mac is a rip off. If you are referring to pricing then you are totally mistaken. Can you prove the "rip off" bit please. :D

Intel Core 2 Duo 2.0GHz
2GB DDR2 Memory
120GB hard drive1
NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics
Standard keyboard
White polycarbonate shell

R12, 999

If you don't think that is a rip-off then I don't know. That is daylight robbery if you ask me. Are you kidding me? You can buy a laptop with those specs for half the price.

AND it's the same Intel components that go into normal PC's. Unfortunately, the premium is for the cool factor.

Edit: And I own a few Mac's myself, so I can comment quite fairly on the topic having used both Mac and PC quite extensively.

If I believed that I'd be a fool to buy even one.

That's impressive - in a matter of minutes you went from two macs to owning three or more - where did you find a shop open at this hour? :D

I have a Mac Mini, Macbook (given to my sister - hence the swing between owning two or three) and a Macbook Air. Edited the third time as not to look "flashy" or like I am trying too hard.

Can you honestly tell me that the hardware in a Mac is any different to a windows machine and worth the premium for hardware?

Yes, on the whole Mac's are great. Although I have my issues with them - I can't deny they are stable as anything and work quite well in the right environment...but - just looking at hardware specs, there is no legitimate reason for the premium (and it's inflated even more in SA).

Lets try is this way....how do you justify a mac costs quite a fair chunk more than it's PC equivalent? I am open to reasonable discussion and maybe you can persuade me otherwise?

There are rumors that macs might become cheaper.. but don't get your hopes up though even if it were true core would continue to rip us.

This is what I have read from various sites (mainly ITWEB, CNET, ANANDTECH, MACRUMORS, NOTEBOOKREVIEWS).
It is the form factor and the OS X marriage that make Apple Macs attract a premium--the R&D that goes into making the hardware work integrally and efficiently with the OS X and its applications--so even when the specs on Macs may be a few months out of date, the machine will outlast the current PCs--in fact, it has been shown that lifespan of Mac is bout 6-7 years (on same install of OS X, no need to reformat), while PC with Windows will last on average 2-3 years--then require a fresh install on Windows.

However, having said this, check out the HP and DELL US-website and look for the ALL-IN_ONE desktops, the form factor gap is narrowing rapidly--the only bummer is that these beautiful machines run Windows which makes the hardware less efficient.

I use mainly windows based software (not available for OS X yet) so I do not yet have a Mac--pity, because I love how the OS X "talks" to the hardware so well.

Macs are expensive because they're a premium brand. Their machines are fancy. Seriously though, take an iMac, it's so space-efficient, so beautiful, and completely silent. Even when the GPU + CPU is stressed you can't hear any fans at all! That's what you're paying for, and the OS X experience.

Also, Macs are more expensive here in SA than in the USA, because of importing costs etc. and Core.

But Macs generally last very long and have a great resale value, justifying their costs. Also, you're a creative professional, you're probably anyway using software like Adobe Creative Suite, Final Cut etc. which costs way more than the computer itself so it's not a big deal.

If you want a cheap Mac, get a Hackintosh.

well the point is, we're getting ripped off... i wont mind paying 9k for a macbook, that's worth it for me. i'll still keep my desktop PC for games cause i'll pay like 13k for a desktop that'll annihilate any i mac costing 36k or less :o ... sorry but when it comes to the i mac you'll never convince me it's worth it. lol what happens to your screen when you need to upgrade your processor? :-D

i understand and accept that when i buy a macbook i'm paying more for a machine inferior in power to its PC counterpart but the look, feel and assembly makes it worth it for me.. not to mention the OS. desktop PC's are a different topic altogether
