Thread: Good open source cloning software

Default Good open source cloning software

    Hey fellow admins

This may be of use to some of you who are looking for a good solution to do cloning on your network, and can't afford Ghost Corp/don't want to waste money.

While doing some research, I found somthing called FOG (free open ghost I think.) Basically, it does the same thing as Ghost Corp, but it is open source and is probably a lot more advanced than Ghost ever was. Computers boot from PXE, so no more carrying around boot stiffies/cd's/flash drives.

I've compared it to Clonezilla Server Edition and it wins hands down in ease of use. The web interface they wrote really makes things easy. While they don't quite support the range of filesystems Clonezilla does, they are getting there. Also, it is more limited in what Linux distro's can host the server, but I guess that in time will improve as well.

For more info, goto their site: http://www.fogproject.org

If anyone is interested, version 0.27 has been released. It includes full blown Windows 7 support as well as some other big fixes and improvements. We'll be upgrading at work pretty soon, when we get the time
