Seacom Home Use

Im a regular internet user and love to play online games and surf, but im getting pretty sick of the high prices in SA. I'v been hearing about seacom everywhere and would like to know, is it avalible for home use? if it is. How much will it cost and where can u buy it?

As far as I'm aware its meant to improve our current ISP speeds and eventually lower prices.

According to the recent SEACOM interview on Telcotalk (CNBC), it is a fibreoptic cable coming down the East coast of Africa – from India and China. There will be other cables in the next few years (about 2) coming down the West coast from Europe and America. The SEACOM cable landed at Umtinzini (KZN) earlier this month (June, 2009) and Toby Shapshak (editor – Stuff magazine) thought that speeds might improve (not as much as hyped) but the price wouldn’t go down. Basically, you will get an improved service for the same price. He was also scathing about ICASA (which I agree with). I would venture that the international bit (the SEACOM cable to KZN shores) is as expected. Where the wheels will fall-off is with SA (Telkom) involvement to the ISP’s in the ‘last mile’ segment. Pray.

In other words, SEACOM will improve Internet services generally – you don’t ‘buy’ it.
