Bloemfontein - Passengers set alight five coaches of the long distance rail service, Shosholoza Meyl, on Monday after a locomotive broke down in the Free State.

Shosholoza Meyl acting chief executive Viwe Mlenzana said the train from Bloemfontein to Johannesburg, with about 150 passengers on board, was set alight at Virginia early on Monday.

He said: "While arrangements were being made for a replacement locomotive, the passengers became very angry and started to threaten Shosholoza Meyl employees on board.


"The damage to the train is estimated at R9m. No-one was injured.

Mlenzana said buses were organised to take passengers to their destinations.

The line was closed for most of Monday while the wreckage was cleared.


Trains departing from Johannesburg to the Eastern Cape later on Monday were not expected to be affected.

Shosholoza Meyl said trains en route to Johannesburg were affected.

A board of inquiry had been set up to investigate the circumstances that led to the incident.

I dont understand. They burn your train, and you get buses to take them to their destination, instead of police to take them to jail where arsonists belong???
 
It seems that some bipeds should stick to vines for public transportation.

They should stop replacing the things they break and burn.
Yes you punish the people that were not doing the burning but if they have no money to buy food maybe they will start appreciate the things the government provide for them.
 
ahh what would a week be like in Africa if there were no burning of schools, trains and all kinds of buildings.

Their brains are broken and should be set alight too. (i.e. remove them from society -> Jails exist for a reason!!)
 
Never underestimate the power of a large group of stupid people. Last week they danced in poo this week they burn the train..
 
Was listening to some John Mayer when I was reading this, ironically he was singing "Never gonna stop this train" I guess he was wrong :p

WTF? For the love of all things green and shiny, how can these people not comprehend cause and effect? You burnt the train therefore it no longer works (like most of the union members); now you are upset that the train isn't working?

Is the population of this country retarded? :erm:

Perhaps it would be better to burn ANC cronies luxury BMWs instead.
 
Thats our tax money up in flames, for those of us that pay alot of tax. Another few months then Im out of this hellhole.
