My setup runs two power supplies of which the second GFX card has its own power supply. I could easily switch one of when I am not gaming, and save on some power and heat. Would that damage the card?

I don't think it would be wise to switch 1 gpu off while the pc is running. If you don't unplug the card from the pc it's still consuming power anyway (receiving power fom the mobo)

I doubt you'd save much electricity anyway, at idle the card won't consume too much power too?

NOT A GOOD IDEA.....rather dont if power saving was in your mind you shouldnt have bought the big card anyway simple

@Justin - I bought the big cards for when I need them, which is not always ;)

@Silver - Sure, give me your address and hold your breath while I mail them :)

Looking at your rig I dont see how power saving is such a big issue to you.

Maybe he puts as much money as he can into his pc and so he tries to save cash wherever he can?

Nothing wrong with that IMO, also take into consideration the environment...the environment

Sigh. Reminds me of the fat guy that buys a whole bunch of junk food and a diet coke.

wow, anyone have a stove? You know that just because it comes with 4 stove plates doesn't mean you have to turn them all on when you fry an egg, they are just there for when you need them.

I wouldn't recommend powering off the PSU while the system is running, but if you turn the psu for the second GPU off before you startup it is not going to damage the card or system, at most you will get a warning that there is insufficient power to your GPU.

I have to agree with silverlight though that the power consumption difference would be negligeable to say the least. Especially since nvidia's more recent drivers "underclock" the cards automatically when not in use.

Yeah, seems like a difficult concept to understand.

This is actually what gave me the idea. I remember getting the same warning on a previous card a couple years back. I mean, if Nvidia actually allows an under powered card to continue operating, it would not be a train smash to do it do it on purpose.

Yep, it makes sense.
