Johannesburg - President Jacob Zuma is expanding his Nkandla residence at a cost of R65m, although the presidency has denied the part of the Mail & Guardian report that taxpayers' money would pay toward it.

The publication reported that the taxpayer was footing "the largest chunk of the bill" for the construction of a police station, helicopter pad, military clinic, visitors' centre, parking lot for 40 vehicles and three staff quarters.

But just before deadline the presidency told the publication the Zuma family had planned extensions to the homestead before the elections earlier this year with no government funding used for the construction work.

So one of two things have happened here:

a) Zuma is lying and once again wasting millions in tax money on his own house while his supporters remain homeless. I might be a little less critical had it been for a residence for ALL future presidents.

b) He isn't lying, but that begs the question where does someone with the "modest" salary of president suddenly get R65m from?

Either way, its not good. Emulating old Bob, eh Jacob?

Well I think it's a bit confused here. The work outside his residence IS from taxpayers money and they don't dispute that. He was talking about the work being done inside his actual property, I'm not sure how much that costs but like they said in M&G, most of the R65m is the clinic, police station etc.

But like you say, he has his official presidential residence for this type of thing, but then again he does also need those facilities if he's spending time in the area, seeing as they literally don't exist there. I suppose it's for the rest of the community too.

I think Schabir Shaik will have to explain this one to you;)

Well our presidents of past blew even more money - how about the lovely roads between George and Knysna, not to mention the airport. All built thanks to an ex president.

I still don't see the issue, its infrastructure investment and its just a bunch of soar people bitching and moaning. If this money was spent in an exclusive white suburb it would not even make ripples.

We all can use those. Can I use his Bathroom as a public toilet?

Again... a lot of the money is on a clinic and police station just outside of his home, probably because these things don't exist in the area. So it will be public. But I don't think many people are going to benefit from it actually.

I don't think we know how much is being done on his actual property, and he claims they planned that even before the elections.
