I wouldn't have known myself, except that SWE2 does let you know when updates are available, which is great.

Methinks we need some forumites using IPCop and other Linux firewall distros to start threads here in this forum .

    Question

After reading that link which is better to go for IPcop or Smoothwall ? I have already downloaded the smoothwall latest release and was going to do the setup this evening, but now after reading the various posts , which to go for ??

I was actually thinking about that earlier, it would be nice if there was a SWE2 mod available that made a periodic distinctive beep - specifically to alert humans to the fact that updates are available...having said that, there are these SWE2 Homebrew mods [I haven't tried them...yet]:Also, the SWE2 Summary of Homebrew Mods...

That's an entire thread all on its own...my advice, try both, use whichever you like the most .

That sounds like it would only really be usefull if your smoothwall was anywhere near you (Mine's locked in a cabinate in the furthest ends of my place). On the other hand if it was a constant periodic beep that could be intensely annoying if you're busy..

I was thinking a short but distinct [from other] beep[s], say every hour or so - maybe only during daylight hours, or night if you are an insomniac...naturally there is an alternative - you could just subscribe to the SWE2 forum thread that fixes are announced on - get notified via email .

The beep is a good & bad idea, good because I never check the stupid thing. Bad because our smoothwall box is buried so deep in the server room that it would take me a week to figure what is beeping.

There are other mods for SWE2 that use sendmail, but I think perhaps the easiest is to add an email subscription to the relevant SWE2 forum thread, and if necessary, supply an email address that acts as an internal distrobution list when it hits your mail server...

You can do whatever you like, its a simple linux distribution. Hell you could jack a GSM modem onto it and send SMS's to your self - the fact of the matter is its a simple SOHO tool and it doesn't really matter all that much for those purposes, honestly half the fixes these days are unlikely to be serious bugs or exploits (And yes, do go on about the "zomg potential root exploit in OpenSSH when its a sunny wednesday and you've had bacon for breakfast").

My POV about the SWE2 fixes - they are a lot fewer & less of a hassle than Windoze Update, so one SWE2 fix-pack now & then is not serious at all.

I would however like to get PCMCIA working in SWE2 [for 3G], but it looks like a mission - change Kernel versions 2.6.x, something about a Super Kernel that doesn't support PCMCIA...I need to get an idiots guide to whether it is even possible, otherwise I will have to use FC3 or some other distro...
