Thread: Using Billion 5102 with no ADSL connection

Default Using Billion 5102 with no ADSL connection

I've just received my Billion 5102 ADSL modem / 4 port router, but I'm still waiting for Telkom to install my ADSL line.

I reado somewhere on this formum that it is possible to use the router functions of the modem without a connection but I'm wondering about a few things.

Firstly it takes quite a few minutes before I get an IP address allocated to my PC, is this normal.

Secondly, my PC picks up no traffic from the router...can't even ping it's default ip address, is this normal.

Thirdly, should I be able to get to the admin console of the modem without being connected to ADSL

    Thanks

Your router should be set up as a DHCP server by default (otherwise you can always reset it). This means that it assigns the IP addresses to your PCs. Make sure that under your TCP/IP settings the following is enabled: "Obtain IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically". Yes, you can access the admin panel without a connection.

Address allocation should be quick assuming your'e using some method to request it i.e. ipconfig /renew or selecting "Obtain IP address automatically" in your network settings.

If you can't ping the default IP address it suggests you're on the wrong subnet. What IP address does your machine get from DHCP?

Yes you should be able to get to the admin console of the modem without being connected to ADSL.

    Thanks guys.

I've tried using another cable which also yielded the same slow response and no reception from the modem.

I'm going to plug it into my pc at work to see if I get a different result. I rather it be my network card than a DOA modem

Plugged the router into my work PC and all is working perfectly. Looks like my network card is buggered.
