RICA - contract holders?

Do you know what it's phone number is? If not, can you send an sms with it? Vodacom were able to get the SIM number from the phone number on one of my SIM cards. (One of the kids was away and couldn't give me the SIM number.)

Every time there has been a "Deadline" it has been extended. Driving Licences, FICA, etc. So on past performance the 31st December deadline will be extended.

Incidently I tried to RICA at a Vodacom outlet with my ID and TV licence and they wouldn't accept the TV licence as proof of residence.

@oc, I did the whole RICA thing for my contract sims last month but v4me says the following

is that a glitch in the RICA matrix or did I completely waste my time (30 minutes) at Vodaworld Customer Service center?

+1

Exact same thing happened to me. Went in purposely to RICA and they told me yesterday 'you still need to RICA'

*sigh*

I can see many people who have done it getting their numbers cut off and getting very angry ...

No and no. I presume Vodacom can check on their system which IMSI has been associated with this IMEI, but thinking about it now, AFAIK it is an embedded AT&T SIM and maybe it is only South African SIMs that need to be RICA'd. Can OC or VD confirm please?

I stupidly rushed out and had my bank accounts FICA'd as soon as it was announced, only to be told after the deadline my bank didn't have my documents, so I had to repeat the procedure. This time I'm only doing it once, so will wait until as late as possible before registering.

I've been very worried about RICA ever since the Media Tribunal and Protection of Information Bill came about. We need to realise that under the current climate where the ruling party wants to limit the free flow of information something like RICA will ultimately prove disastrous for anyone disagreeing with the ANC government. I am very sad that it came to this and that there seems to be very little recourse and very little that can be done.

The bottom line is that with this law and implementation a private citizen that disagress with the government (like myself now on this forum) would very easily be traced to his/her house.

This would include opposition politicians, media editors, journalists, judges and private citizens. This law is so draconian its actually amazing that we allowed it go through.

I am going to try and get a legal oppinion on it, and I think it needs to be taken to the concourt.

The other sad thing about this is that we are paying for this law ourselves with our high cellphone charges.

I can just imagine the conversations when the bill was written. "See now we can trace anyone that disagrees with us and pick them up and they will be paying for it themselves."

For all the people that say the government does not know what its doing: "The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was to make us believe he does not exist".

I don't know where this is going to end, I just hope it ends quickly, I am tired of being a frog in luke warm water...

Regarding RICA-ing an Amazon Kindle:

Anyone?

We can not and as far as I know am not required to RICA international sims. It will be the same with people using their home network sims here for roaming. It will just work. I do not understand though how you will be able to use a AT&T sim here?

Ah, so criminals should just use a foreign SIM when organizing crime? A ZIM card maybe?

The way I understand it, Amazon have a deal with AT&T that they will pay the 3G bill and AT&T have a roaming agreement with Vodacom.
In South Africa we don't get full web access, just Amazon.com, Wikipedia and an @kindle.com email address.

Zim prepaid sims wont work here....as wont many other prepaid sims from other countries. When people with contracts roam here we can always trace it back to their home network and trace them.

With the “One Network” service there is no need for customers to pre-register, no roaming deposits, and no complicated dialling formats. Zain customers can recharge their pre-paid lines with locally purchased top up cards.
I can use my Kenyan and Zambian MTN prepaid cards at OR Tambo without any setup. The above suggests I can enable roaming on them pretty simply as well.
