Speed over WDS

I have a WDS setup using two WRT54G routers to connect two wired networks (no other wireless clients). The distance between the two wireless routers is about 50m.

According to the Status>wireless page (using Alchemy v1.0 firmware) the connection speed is 54Mbits/s, the rssi = -80 (approx).

When transfering large files accross the wireless link, I get a consistent speed of about 1.5Mbytes/s (~12Mbits/s). I read many posts about WDS cutting the bandwidth in half, but apparently a WDS link between only two AP should give the same speed as a AP-client config. Is this tue? (The only reason for using WDS, is because of the windows file sharing issues in the AP-client mode).

When connected at 54Mbits/s, does the rssi value influence the transfer speed, or does one get a specific transfer speed at 54Mbits/s WDS (irrespective of the rssi)?
