So I thought I would start this thread so that people can post events that might lend themselves to some nice photographs. I will add any events posted to the OP.

Try and post links along with your event, makes details, place, etc easier.

I'm thinking to maybe make things easier to have different sections for different areas or should there be different threads for that managed by people living in those areas (i.e. CT, JoBurg, Durban, etc)?

To start this off:

CAPE TOWN
June/July 2010:
11 June – 11 July (Match playing days): FIFA Fan Fest at Grand Parade
September 2010:
21 - 25: Ysterplaat Africa Aerospace and Defence Airshow

COUNTRYWIDE
11 June - 11 July: Any of the FanFest's during the SWC - http://www.fifa.com/worldcup/organisation/fanfest/southafrica/index.html
When it rains: take photo's of raindrops. Experiment with off camera flash: http://strobist.blogspot.com/2009/05/how-to-photograph-water-drops-with-one.html

Slow start. Im not really keen on making people believe they need events to produce art :)
I try to see oppertunities everywhere. Whats unique about your work if you snap a football player or a Hawk doing a low flyover, when 6000 other cameras takes the exact same shot in that direction.

Yes that is obviously the point but look at SiriS, this thread informed him of a photographic opportunity he's never had, or thought of, before.

Pleasure thats the aim of the thread... feel free to add any events that may already be in your diary but not in this thread...

I have to take a supplier from the UK around to Cape Point now. Weather is actually looking pretty good, with some nice clouds... This opportunity is only for me though, sorry.

Soz, didnt mean offence :D I tried to be inspirational.
But i do agree with you, and me. :)

On the clouds note (Hi Quantum, long time no see, since I left flickr), This weekend will be great for diffused light situations...

I was wondering if that was you... Good to hear from you again. Will probably not renew my account either. Time to move my photography off the internet (unless someone pays to put it there).

Got a busy weekend ahead. My camera will probably stay in the bag, but I'm sure there will be some awesome cloudy sunsets...

They're going to be demolishing the Athlone towers in Cape Town at the end of July, source is iol.co.za. Hopefully they don't postpone it again.

Do you know what the best vantage point would be to photograph the demolition? I've been wondering every time I drive around those towers where to photograph from. If you stand at UCT you have a nice view, but its far and I'm worried about haze. Other places I thought could be cool to photograph from would be the old mutual building in pinelands, a tall building somewhere in athlone or rondebosch with an unobstructed view.

I've no idea either to be honest. I was talking to my friend about it and we're both stumped... hopefully we'll think of something before the end of July :)

Cape Town Artillery Gun Push
13:00, Wednesday 22 September 2010, City Hall, Cape Town

Cape Town will be the first major city in South Africa to host a unique artillery gun race.

This novel event, hosted by the City of Cape Town and the Cape Garrison Artillery (CGA), involves over a hundred soldiers, in teams of eleven, pushing anti-aircraft cannons, each weighing about 950 kg, over a route of 7,5 km.

I'd love to watch and take photos but we have training whole day in Milnerton... just my luck :(

ninja training.

I wish :D Health and safety stuff.

The upside was while waiting at Century City there were jets flying overhead. Really low overhead. I need to make arrangements for the air show on Saturday. I hear it might be the last one in at Ysterplaat Base :(
