Ok, here's the deal. (skip to the stupid question bit if you want)

I'm an internet junky, I live on the net. I'm a web designer and I also hang on the net like most people for fun, so I'm more or less online from the moment I wake up until I go to sleep.

On the 15th of August, my brother is going overseas for two weeks and I have to house sit, which means I need to be there in the evenings.
I rent my place, have no pets + the cottage is on my landlords property, so I have no excuses that I need to look after my own place.

My brother has dialup and can only get 28.8, which is just not on - it's pathetic.

The stupid question bit

My brothers place, as the crow flies, is max 1.5km from my house. He is, to all intents and purposes, at the bottom of a long sloping hill from my house, with all the usual suburban stuff inbetween - trees, houses, walls and roads.

How much would it cost to setup a temporary wireless connection between my place and his and how feasible is it ?
I don't have any wireless components at all. I can spend max. R1000 on this exercise.

Is it possible ?

I'm more than prepared to buy second hand hardware and to beg borrow and steal whatever is needed to hookup temporary cantennas.

I don't care what it looks like (within reason) or if I have to climb up a few trees or onto the roof to get some kinda LOS.

From what I understand, it costs R2000 to setup a single node.
R4000 for 2 weeks is obviously not a good plan.

1 AP, 1 Wifi Card, 2 Jagi's ( 9dbi should do it ) and some cable. Not gonna make it for under a 1000, but you'll get close. Brackets and stuff are optional - cableties and hiltis work wel for a short time. U realise of course that if you pull this off, your boet will want this on a permanent basis, So ask him to take some of the load.

Would that be for both premises then ? R1000 ?

My boet would be well chuffed, but I'm moving out of my current premises at end of September on my way to London (most likely)

If this proves too difficult, I suppose I could always lie to an iBurst reseller, twice, and test their service for 7 days and then another 7 days.

Then again, from what I understand, iBurst usually performs like a 28.8 modem anyway :D

Mayby if ur lucky you can pull it off for about R2000 (probably gonna end up near R3000), wireless equipment is expensive...

You should really consider getting your brother to pay half and make it a permanant solution

Damn, looks like it's out of the question then. I really cant afford more than R1000 for two weeks usage. Guess I'll just have to juggle my schedule - zip over to feed the cats at 6.30pm, go back home till 11pm then go back to stay the night. :D

Now here is a thing. daveogg getting adsl installed on wednesday and bb_matt considering iburst.

if you just got wireless NICs in ad-hoc mode you might pull it off for R1500, R1000 is a squeeze.

The bigest problem with your situation is by sitting on the net all day you have no friends to borrow equipment from :PP

I have no friends interested in the internet to borrow equipment from ;)

time to make some friends in the right place :p

pity you in joburg the durbanite understand problems assoiated to costs and so are happy to lend equipment if they have.

maybe there is someone out there willing to help... *nudge nudge*

Matt, have you take a look at the nodedb site? Logged in? Registered the two nodes? Perhaps there are connectivity options in the area, other interested parties...
