Has anyone tested video calls off network?

I heard there are problems with makeing video calls from Vodacom to MTN and vica versa. (billing issue) Though I've been told international video calls shouldn't be a problem.

The manual of my 6680 notes that it's supposed to be able to handle a video call from an ISDN phone as well. So has anyone actually managed to get a TView or something similar working with a 3G phone?

So the question begs; Does Vodacom to Telkom vidcalls work? (or other way round.)

The protocols used differ between ISDN (H.320), IP-based systems (H.323) and 3G (3G-324M). You'll need a gateway to translate between these and as far as I know they are currently not available. Vodacom is busy implementing gateways to provide video calling between different systems.

3G to 3G calls should be less of an issue as it's just a CS call using the same protocol. You're right on the billing issue though. A Vodacom video call in SA is less than the UK or even MTN. I'll have to check the current status.

A future release of the dashboard will include a 3G video call client. This will allow you to make a video call from your (3G-data-card equipped) laptop to a 3G handset or vice-versa.

I've played with this and it works well. You use a WEB cam and a headset and off you go.

Video call activation

Is it true that I should be able to make a video call to 121? Is there any other way to test this feature (I don't know anyone with a 3G phone)?

I tried enabling this feature using Vodacom4me but I was told (by 155) this morning that my attempt to enable video calling failed. Why didn't they fix it without waiting for me to call back? Anyway I was told to wait about an hour which I did but was once again unable to make a video call to 121. This time I was told it would take 4 to 6 hours.

Does anyone know if Video calls come off your free minutes... theoretically it should, since it is still a call and you are paying alot for those minutes (and video call's cost the same as a call)

I wish the term "free minutes" could be banned - nothing is ever "free" - bundled minutes would be more accurate IMO...
Agreed, but selling stuff with 'free' extras is much easier

It's been awhile. So when can we start makeing video calls to MTN, PC's and ISDN PBX's?

I don't see much of a reason why we can't make video calls to the competition? (Other than red tape?) Can't it be enabled even if we have to pay a few cents more?
