Hi,

Does anyone have any information about the 5.4GHz Band deregulation in regards to local municipalities and governments to use freely?

Thanks

LOL. The current act in power is the Communications act.
No - it hasnt been amended to international standards on public frequencies.
No - governmint will probably never allow the use of "Public Frequencies".
No - the new DOC convergence bill does not make mention of Public Frequencies either.

AFAIK..The next Centrino chipset will include 802.11a. So, unless 5.4GHz is unregulated, each owner of a new notebook PC will have to apply for a Radio Frequency license :D

Hi Guys,

From what I heard, according to SITA, the 5.4GHz band is deregulated for municipalities and governments only. Or atleast they can use that band without needing a VANS license.

The intel 915ABG wifi chipset is packaged with alot of centrino laptops avalible already and that has 802.11a.

there has been some movement as regards municipalities recently...afaik there is an internal ICASA memo regarding municipalities and a form of self-provision although i do not know if this mentions any access to frequency

it all seems to be based on private telecomms network licensing as opposed to VANS...will find out more

We are busy with a deal with a Municipality and are also looking at the 5.4ghz band. I found a Icasa documents that says the following:

Band: 5470 - 5725m
Type of device: Hiperlan: indoor and outdoor use
Max Radiated Power: 1 W eirp
Relevant Standard: EN 300 836-1, EN 301 489-1, 17
Additional requirements: CEPT/ERC/DEC (99)23

I would also like to know if there is any documentation of Icasa where it states that it can be used by municipalities.
