Hi everyone. If this is in the wrong category, could one of the admins please move it to the correct place thanks.

About 2 weeks ago my dad opened two Weekender everyday contracts at Vodacom4U at Clearwater Mall.

On tuesday I got a phonecall from a women that says she works for Vodacom, and she wanted to speak to my dad. So I said "Well you need to phone the other number, as I use this number." The women then asked me for the number. I'm thinking well you work for Vodacom surely you have the number? The answer was we are confirming details. So I gave her the number and phoned my dad to tell him, someone from Vodacom was looking for him.

Today my dad got a call from what I assume is the same woman. She said do you have these two numbers. "Yes". Then she read out the first 4 digits of his bank account number and asked him to complete it. As my dad is paranoid (Thank the lord), he asked if he could rather come into the Shop at Clearwater Mall where we got the contracts and confirm it. The answer was, he needs to confirm it over the phone. He then told the person in no uncertain terms using many swear words to get knotted.

I just want to inform everyone. If Vodacom3G wouldn't mind checking if this is standard practise, and if not, please inform someone of this.
My dad has tried to phone Customer Care to inform them, but they seem very busy.
Will try again tonight.

If it's not a scam I apologise to the Vodacom Rep that got pwned :)
It just sounds very off to me.

Crash, was there callerid attached to either of those 2 calls? If you could p.m. the caller's number to v3g, perhaps it is possible to determine if the call is genuine or not...not would be something like a pre-paid number...

IC, unfortunately it was a private number that phoned my dad, which was the first thing that bothered me. Calls I have received from Vodacom in the past always have a callerID. I have found a telkom land line number in my phone.

Silent_Bob, sounds like a normal scam. Problem is they knew the two numbers and had the first 4 digits of my dads bank account number, not his credit card number.
Considering the cell numbers are less than 3 weeks old, and I have only updated cellphone details at my bank, I have a funny feeling someone at the vodacom shop or my bank got hold, or sent out my details.

Hang on. Here's something.
The person who phoned on Tuesday, phoned from a land line. I also got a call this morning from that same number, but when I answered the person hung up. Funny enough the call I got, came through about 15 mins, before they called my dad. Hmmmm.... I wonder......

Crash, can you post the telephone number - except for the last 2 digits in case it is a caller that has not got fraud on their mind...

Well no info from vodacom as yet... It does sound fairly scammish to me.

Vodacom are always (in my experience) very circumspect and respectful of your privacy. They tend not to ask you personal details.

Sure thing IC..

I've phoned it and it definately wasn't Vodacom :p
I'm sure the person who answered also had the same voice as the tuesday call.

Bloody Nice, I know have a company name. Arf9999 is the king :)
And it's nothing to do with Vodacom.

If you want some guys to join you in paying the company a little visit with baseball bats and chains let me know.

/me tink so, dey ah gonna meet sum wood agaist der eads

ps, I gotsa 50 kg bag of cement in my garage we could use.

So I take it that this company has nothing to do with Vodacom, but what are they up to? I ask because I also remember getting a call just after I signed up a contract, can't remember how far we got but I also got cold feet at some point and ended the call - think I did give them ID number but not bank details...
Thanks

Question : how did this person get the first 4 digits of your dads bank account?

<Looks into crystal ball>
I think it's someone at the bank or someone at the vodacom 4U shop to be honest. Could be wrong.
