Rooted and upgraded my Hero with the XDA dev 2.1 firmware (which was just an unlocked version of the official) and couldn't be happier. Rooting is absolutely worth it and far safer/simpler than 99% of people will make it seem.

Just get the firmware (google or search XDA developers I suppose) and follow http://www.roothtchero.co.uk/step1
Only advice is ignore the rubbish about applying the initial 100mb firmware (the "downgrade") from HTC's site. Doesn't work on local heroes and is unnecessary.

Best part about the Rooting is you can just backup your phone TO YOUR PHONE (via nandroid) forever after. Feels way more secure to me.

I'm running Fusion Rom Update 7. This is Froyo ala Android 2.2 and I'm very happy with it. You do lose sense though but I don't really miss it. Ohh and the phone is faster too.
Can't think of anything wise to say atm thanks.

There is no "official" upgrade. Leaf have been making promises for the last 8 months or so, but it's mostly lies. Rooting is the only way to make the newer apps work.

Why not root? Seriously, rooting makes a world of difference to any Android-powered phone. Plus, you can undo the root as well if you'd ever want to... Not that you actually WOULD want to once you've done it.

I am not sure which instructions I must use to root my Hero to 2.1? Any help on clear instructions I can follow, I do not want my phone to BRICK or whatever which doesn't sound good.
Is rooting safe enough and recommended?

Just a heads-up for those HTC Hero users who - like me - are too scared to root because of warranty issues .... yesterday e-mailed Leaf.co.za and frankly was astounded that I received a response within a few minutes. I was passed onto a Leaf employee called Tshepo, and he said all I need to do is bring my Hero to the LAB88 store in Cedar Square Mall, Fourways, Johannesburg, and they would flash the phone with the official HTC 2.1

Earlier today I took it to LAB88, and 10 minutes later walked out with 2.1 installed. Once the warranty is up I will make use of one of the many other custom ROMs that exist out there.
