Hi ppl,

I need to buy a new LCD monitor, and I have no experience in the field whatsoever :) ...

I was hoping someone could help me find a decent 19" LCD monitor withing the price range of R2000 - R4000, and a place to buy it ofcourse :D

Thx a lot!

You can buy a decent 19' LCD for that kinda money. Cheap LCD's can be found at Makro, but if you want some serious brands like Samsung or HP then some people on the forum might have access to wholesale stores for you. If you have a company and live near or in Pretoria you can try www.ecotechnology.co.za

There are many though...

What resolution do you need? From my experience, one can get a 19" with 12ms response rate for under R4000 (Makro with Fujitsu Siemens and PC Computer and Gamer world in Centurion with BenQ and LG), but they seldom display a resolution above 1240x1024 (same as many 17", including my LG LCD).

I checked a few other pricelists as well, and it seems you won't get higher than this for under R4000... IMHO, I'd rather save a few bucks then and get a 17" that can display the same resolution. Otherwise, whip out more cash and go for something more expansive that can do 1600x1200...

Last thing - my LG gives excellent display and refresh-rates, but unfortunately has a dead pixel (a red dot that doesn't go away). I was informed that manufacturers only replace LCD monitors that have 6 or more dead pixels - this is a general policy. I don't know if this is true, can anyone comment?

Hope that helps!

Hey guys,

Thx for the replies :)

I have an account at Sahara, but ofcourse not sure what to choose from the wide selection of LCD's there...

Is the Samsung SyncMaster 193P any good ?

before buying from Sahara - phone them and ask them to tell you what their policy on dead pixels are. Also, I know someone who will probably beat Saharas prices comfortably.

From reviews it looks good - unfortunately also only 1240x1024. See my previous post.

Can't seem to find the reponse rate of the pixels - for gaming you need less than 12ms. For office/web use, this shouldn't be too much of an issue.

Well I am going to be gaming with it (taking it to rage :D), so then maybe LG is a better option, since their top of the range 19" is 12ms, altho res is 1280x1024, which i don't think makes a big difference to me really.. (I have 19" CRT which ahs been kept at 1280x1024 for the past 4 years :P) Or am i horribly wrong ?

Anyone have any ideas on price and/or where to buy ?

If you are going to be gaming, you may want to get an LCD with a 8ms response time...

I got a 8ms 19" philips from Storgate in CT for R3500.

PC Game world has got LG's with kickass response times. 17 inch would set you back just over R2000 last time I checked. You are bound to get Great LG 19" for under R4000 there. But it is not wholesale. They are better than Incredible Connection though....

@ant : I am more interested in the fact that he said 8ms... They are normally a lot more expensive than the 12ms jobs...

i bought acer lcd 15" from incredible connection and found 1 dead pixel.
went back to incredible conn and had it replaced with new one. then at home i found another 1 dead pixel from the lcd.
went back to incredible conn and had it replaced it again. this time i had it tested with the techie there.
then i had no problem.

so i don't want to believe that it is a general policy to replace it with 6 or more dead pixels.

BTW acer lcd sucks. buy samsung or lg.

Hey ... Interesting topic as I might get a 17" LCD monitor as as well.

As some of you know, I was selling my DVD player at R2000 and got no replies - except for one guy that phoned and said he would order me something at Rectron for equivilant value, dealer price.

I was thinking a Fujitsu Siemens Scaleoview T17-1 or Samsung Syncmaster 710v monitor? Though - I'm not sure what brands Rectron sell! I'm not sure of the dealer price of these two yet, but the Siemens has a 13.5ms response time and I'm not sure of the Samsung.

Which monitor can I get from Rectron at dealer price of R2000, which is best? How are Aopen? Where can I read reviews on LCD monitors?

As far as I'm aware, response times go in multiples of 4 (i.e 12ms, 8ms etc) so I think that is incorrect.

Anyway to get back on topic you can get a Gigabyte 17", 8ms, 450:1 contrast ratio for about R2k (depends how much mark-up the seller puts on and if the business has to pay VAT or not - can't tell the dealer price for obvious reasons).

I'm not a seller though - I just get a price-list from my buddy who is a dealer
