Hi,

Have been lurking around here for awhile, but this is my first post.

Don’t know if I should feel special for posting in the fresh new "Hardware" section.

Anyway, this morning my PC gave me the finger and I am not sure what’s wrong.

I started up, left the room, and came back to a Windows message stating that the computer will be restarted bla bla to avoid damage bla bla... did not have enough time to read entire message before it restarted.

And now none of my IDE devices get detected. (HDD and CD Writer/DVD-Rom)

The system is fairly new (AMD 64 3000, Gigabyte k8NF9 -nforce4, 6600 GT)

I don’t have any SATA drives just 1x120Gb IDE drive.

At first I though the HDD is gone, but it does not detect the CDROM either.

Can it be the PSU?

Any suggestions?

unplug your cd rom see if it detects your hdd then unplug your hdd see if it detects your cd rom

maybe there is a conflict
try put them on different cable and if you cant be sure that your cd rom is not set to master

Thanks,

Am at work now so will try all of that tonite.

Thing is its been working 100% for about 2 months now.

I dont remeber doing anything funny last night, worked well the whole weekend untill I started up this morning, that is.

If I remember anything funny that happened or that I did, I will post.

Repeat after me: " Murphy is a bi@tch." Especially when it comes to PCs. :p

Do like killa says, but normally I just disconnect and then reconnect everything. Unplug all IDE and power cables. Then reconnect everything.

ive seen it before both devices are detected but both are set to master then one day they not there

a way to tell if its your cpu is open the cd rom is it opens all is fine

it could also be your motherboard use both slots to test

Thanks,

Will give it a go tonite.

Remembered that I did play around with the "Power Options" in Control Panel, and might of left the setting on "Portable/Laptop".

Can this cause issues, or worse damage anything permantly (like motherboard)?

Because the system did startup and then XP restarted itself and then everything went to the s**ts.

I am hoping that if I start up tonite everything will just be fine :)

well i dont think so because its not windows the recognises your ide devices its your bios so nothing in windows can tell your devices to not be detected, you can stop the device from working but it will still be there

If you don't come right after unplug/replug, do yourself a favour and try a different IDE cable.

If that doesnt work your best option would be to reformat your computer, alought thier might be some stuff that you want to keep on your hdd i think it will be your best bet

pls explain how he is meant to reformat his pc when it doesnt detect any hard drive or cdrom drive...

ffs!

If you dont know the answer, then shut up. Stop guessing and confusing the guy who already has a problem.

ROFL, well even if you could reformat you would still not be able to boot the device. :p

iF they were working, the easiest way is to see if it isnt pehaps an IRQ conflict in the cmos.

remove power to pc
remove battery
locate motherboard jumper reset pins jumper
move jumper over to close psition
move back
re-insert battery and restore power
switch on
if its still not work, try change ids cable, change jumpers to cable select, testing one device at a time.
if your cdrom doesnt pick up try it in another machine, still no joy then swap it out or get a new one.
if another machine picks it up use the working ide cable and set cmos to default
if it still doesnt work and you know how to flash bios u can try that , or better take it to the ppl who sold it to you and get them to swap it out.
pm m if u still stuck

here, do this
1. Enter BIOS
2. Choose Integrated Peripherals menu
3. Disable IDE/Sata Raid function (which is the cmos default)
4. Save and exit
5. Reboot

Thanks for all the advice.

But it all came down to a basic unplug/replug of the IDE cables.

Still dont know why it happened. Cant find any indication,
or any other problems.

I actually did do most of the different BIOS options but nothing worked.

Thanks

Did you install a new FlashDrive / Memory Stick by any chance?
If so uninstall the security drivers that came with it.
The latest version is known to cause problems with IDE devices if the Memory Stick is not present at boot time.
Can't recall wher I got the info but Google on USB Memory and IDE for more info.

Cheers
Chris
