We ordered two of these devices and were wondering if it is at all possible to network two PC's without the use of a wireless router. In other words, we wanna set up an ad hoc peer-to-peer network with only two dongles, one in each PC.

I know its way better to get a router and we will be doing this once we can afford it. We are just looking to share an internet connection among our flat PC's for the moment.

PS: These devices are 802.11b
 
Yes, you should be able to use them to set up a peer to peer network. Windows XP should be able to sort out most of the details for you.
 
Well, we are in a three bedroom flat in Wimbledon, not really too great a distance from one room to the next. Would this present a big problem?

We have a BT Voyager 105 USB modem that we wanna share using ICS with these dongles. Any ever tried a setup like this? Can't really afford a £60 wireless router/modem at the moment.
 
Have you considered using a normal crossover ethernet cable? We all tend to be to quick to go wireless, including myself. But a normal cable is a lot less hassles. Even through I guess by now you already have the dongles.
 
We already have the dongles. One room is a loft room. Ethernet would be too much of a hassle I'm afraid.
 
Download and install Netgear software. Reatsrt PCs and insert dongles. Run network Setup Wizard n enable file sharing. Make workgroup name the same on both PCs. (MSHOME) Run Netgear software. Disable WEP encryption for easy installation. Initiate Ad-hoc. Scan network. Connect.
