I have been watching the conference from the comfort of my living room. I am an end user - I have an uncapped, unshaped ADSL line and my ISP is M-Web. Listening to the conference - the various operators are making all sorts of claims to increased speed and services. Quoting Webafrica - you pay for what you get - you can get cheap & chearful or you can pay for quality and get quality.

My problem with this statement and any of the claims is as follows -

No matter which ISP I use and no matter what I pay - I am still stuck with the same crappy copper wire from the exchange to my home and no matter who I use or how much I pay - the quality of my ADSL line and my speed will not change (even if I use Webafrica!) . I am around 5km from the exchange and am lucky to get 2Mb/s. I would like to know how the various ISP's are going to facilitate the end user getting better speed and quality and overcoming the copper wire issue (the last mile problem).

I watched the Cell C presentation on DSTV channel 319 I believe.

I so hope they can pull it off and sustain it in the long haul........great performance, great latency, great pricing....then watch Telkom and the others fail.....
Man oh man, they need to get it right.

Btw, I totally agree with what you say...still the crappy copper wire and everything that comes with it....

They were saying we should see LTE in 2-3 years time blah blah. - I will still have my crappy copper cable in 3 years time amd will still only be able to get 2Mb/s. So for the ordinary man (or woman) in the street - these are all empty promises and pie in the sky for us. My kids are avid gamers and the latency is a big issue. Can't get 3G in amy area - also far too expensive for the amount of bandwidth I use - averaging around 150GB per month.
