Thread: First Experiences With 8ta

  1. #1

    Default First Experiences With 8ta

I found an Edgars with the free SIMS. I did the RICA thing, which was pretty quick - within hours.

I bought a small recharge voucher, which I loaded.

I checked the balance (always advisable) and it appeared OK.

I didn't make any calls. I tried to send an MMS, which failed. It didn't just fail, but a message kept coming saying "unable to deliver", over and over. I had to remove the message from the outbox.

I checked my balance again using their USSD system and it said 0!

I rang the call centre. They seem determined not to speak to customers. Everything is routed to solve everything through USSD. I reached the bit about MMS settings, and was told to send a USSD command like *18 something #. I hung up and tried that. Instead of getting a nice response, I got another request to send an SMS to 180 in the form "setup <phone model> <make>.

Of course that didn't work either!

I rang the call centre again and finally got through to a human. She said she would send the settings. Nothing came through for about 7 minutes. She said I needed an "authentication code" from the SMS in order to get the settings. So I had to put her on hold to get the code. Even then I didn't get settings.

I asked about the disappearing credit. She said no money had been loaded as far as she could tell. I needed the voucher code to query this or she "couldn't do anything".

There is an 8ta Menu that appears on the phone if you put in the SIM. It has a "services" option. If you select it once, nothing happens. Select it again and it says "Bad url".

All in all, this is quite a disaster.

If you feel brave enough to try it, at least keep your vouchers.

What? Bad service from 8ta? I'm shocked..

Personally, i'm happy to pay slightly more for a service that doesn't have the name 'Telkom' on it..

I had a similar experience when I tried to test an 8.ta SIM - the service just doesn't work, don't waste your time / money.
I'm ashamed of South Africa. It's an absolute disgrace that you can pass matric with a mark of 30 percent." - Jonathan Jansen

It's just a bog-standard setup of the device's APN. Don't think it warrants phoning customer services. :/

Ok 1 person has a problem and suddenly the whole forum decides to not try 8.ta or comment on 8.ta. Hmm. Very happy with 8.ta so far and received 30min free minutes for calls received in October. Just the couple of days the internet was off was very bad but working fine for me.

I never had credit going missing before. Very rare indeed.

    My experience thusfar...
    Went to Telkom Direct Shop.
Got the sim card for free, did the RICA thing.
Almost immediately got the 2 SMS saying balance is less then R5, then balance = R0.
Did not get the welcome SMS immediately.
TDS staff told me to send a "Call Me" from the 8ta phone to my other phone.
    Got number from above.
    Loaded airtime.
    No problems thusfar.

    Online Recharging?
Apparently ABSA/Nedbank from this coming week and FNB in 2 weeks time.

I'm not impressed with 8ta either -- and that is putting it politely!

Internet has been off air for several hours EVERY DAY since I got my 8ta starter pack on Thursday. I hear they have been doing an upgrade the last few days. Surely the right thing to do is replace some of their radio commercials with announcements warning us that the internet service is not quite ready. Yeah, right! Dream on ...

I am seriously considering taking them to court for R250 as a matter of principle.
