Do anyone know where I can find a list of what speeds different phone models support for GPRS / EDGE?

I have a Samsung D500 and Motorola Accompli A008 and would like to know what the difference in GPRS speed would be. I would prefer to use th Motorola, since I have no other use for it and setting it up with the serial cable is much easier than the bluetooth on the Samsung (the battery consumption of Bluetooth + GPRS on my primary phone makes it impractical)

I am planning on buying a prepaid sim card for GPRS usage, since it is easier to control my spending that way.

Simple, check the phone manual to see what class it is. Then check this table.

The easy answer is:

Motorola Accompli A008 is a class 2 device (2+1) giving you;
8-12Kbps Send
16-24Kbps Receive
Samsung D500 is a class 10 device (4+2) giving you;
16-24Kbps Send
32-48Kbps Receive

So the D500 would be a lot better for net use ;)

I am unable to find any GPRS related info in the manuals of most phones (Most manuals got useless technical info pages, listing only suppotted charger,etc.).

Thanks for the quick reply. Any phones that is available for good secondhand prices that support a good GPRS speed / EDGE, preferably with a data cable included as standard equipment?

Also the D500 have a option (with some code to access GPRS settings) to enable EGPRS? Does anyone know what this is (EDGE?) and is it supported on the MTN network?

PS: Any way to get a higher detail of the MTN coverage map as at this url ? I would really like to see if my area (Potch / Kimberley depending on holidays) got EDGE coverage.

What is the maximum supported GPRS class on non-EDGE upgraded base stations?

egprs and edge is the same thing, afaik, and it is definitely supported on the mtn network. if you get the "y'ello broadband" cell info display on your handset, then you are most likely within edge coverage (that is if samsung phones show the cell info?) hope that helps... :)

whats the real difference between 3g and edge? i want to get the nokia N70, a new smartphone with video calling and the works, they say it has edge, does that meen it also has 3g? sorrry, i know my phones but i aint no bof!

3G and EDGE are based on entirely different radio technologies and operate at completely different frequencies. They should be seen as two independent technologies.
If a product is EDGE capable, it does not mean that it can do 3G, and conversely, it should not be assumed that a 3G product is EDGE capable. However, there are dual mode devices capable of supporting both technologies.

The upcoming Nokia N70 supports both 3G and EDGE.

... only 'POTCHEFSTROOM' :-(

Where can one get info on GPRS classes that phones support? Looks like cellphone manuals nowadays only contain instructions on turning the phone on and making calls. I can't even find 'technical information' in the index.

On the web! I myself use www.mobile-review.com, there's an English link on the side.

The D500 supports EDGE, but not out of the box - Samsung disabled it for some or other reason. I have a buddy that got his to work, can check it out for you.

Having fended off half of Nigeria my SonyEricsson K700i is still up for grabs, you can have it for a grand but it doesn't have a cable, I was using bluetooth. Why not just keep the phone plugged in all the time if you're only gonna use it for data anyway?

I activated my EGPRS on my Samsung D500 quite a while ago, was in an EEDGE area and received ... no EDGE. When getting someone to speak to the very technical folk at Samsung, they told me I wouldn't.

So, how do you know if you really are getting EDGE? I did a speed check with EGPRS enabled and received 48kbps ... the same as GPRS

I'm currently using my accompli, getting 4KB/s download (+-32kpbs). I'm outside EDGE coverage so unable to test speed difference on D500.
