If you bent on a bakkie, then make sure you have plenty of "fixit" money at that price range. If you looking for a 4x4 / SUV type vehicle you'll have better luck looking at the thirsty models such as Jeep. Either way, whatever you do stay away from the diesels, you are setting yourself up for a lot of misery.
On bakkies you will want to have a good look at the suspension, check for rust, bent parts, oil leaks on the gearbox and diffs, etc. Same goes for the body work, especially the load bay area. Chances are good that a bakkie in that price range has been worked hard, so be very careful and do not rush into any deal. New paint on the under carage should make you wonder what it is hiding and don't trust the salesman. Engines are easier to repair than the suspension, drive train and body, focus on that.
